ARE CHECK POINTS ON ST PATRICK'S DAY A FORM OF RACIAL PROFILING?

Last Saturday the local police department announced they would have several check points and increase their departments workforce to compensate for an expected higher volume of drunk drivers over St. Patricks Day weekend. Since St. Patrick's Day has become a celebration of Irish culture in America I could see how this could be viewed as racial profiling especially since I live in a city with a high Irish American population. Personally I don't view this measure as being racist. It's an unfortunate fact that most people view this day as an excuse to get wasted rather than celebrate the many wonderful things about Irish culture. Like the whole fact, that they saved civilization during the dark ages and such.
I also think it's unfair to cops to label them as racist for pulling over drivers that fit the description of a criminal that is loose in the area. It's not a cops fault if ethnic minorities commit crimes at a higher rate than other races. If people of Irish decent (or just people who want to be Irish) decide to celebrate St Patrick's day by reenforcing every stereotype about Irish people in existance, I'm going to be mad at the Irish people, not the cops arresting them for drunk driving. I am Irish and I think it would regressive to view my race as victims incapable of taking responsibility for their actions.

Better to be a safe pseudo-racist than have drunk guys running over the elderly.

No it isnt racist. Its a form of alcoholic profiling. Most of the drunks running around arent even Irish. Its the same as checkpoints on New Year or Super Bowl Sunday.
