Voted : misinformed on welfare reform
I don't have a problem with it either, lets face it everyone makes mistakes and everyone needs help. It's the people that abuse it that are irritating, like Jesse's aunt Sue, LOL she was on it for 18 years! That ofcourse was before they changed it so you have to get a job! It was the best thing for aunt sue because the job drug tested her so she had to stop doing drugs and she has been working ever since! I really like her now, i remember 11 years ago she was a sad case and now we're really proud of her! so using it until you get on your feet is great, it's a step up!
I was one of those people who didn't understand the welfare system, , until a good friend of mine parents lost their job and I saw the hell they went through just trying to get the basics, now I know better and ashamed actually of the ideas I used to have toward people on assistance .
I heard about families who were on it for generations. is there any way they can bypass that 5 year limit? I learn something new everyday....

I don't have a problem...I've used it in the past to get by in difficult times. Most women on welfare are perfectly ready to work, but they're living in cities with lousy day-care services, like shitty Toronto, for example.
Voted : what a one sided ballot
First of all that 5 year limit is in one stretch. Not in a lifetime. Secondly, who the hell cant get a job in 5 years??? And the limit was added only in the last 5-10 years. Dont get me wrong, EVERYBODY needs a little help now and then. But limits are needed and the rercipient should do something for the money besides have more babies($$$)
Welfare, aside from being wealth redistribution, acts as an enabler for irresponsible behavior. Some use it responsibly but they are the minority. Why should I feel sorry for the recipients who are laughing all the way to the Lexus dealer?
LCD - No one can by-pass the 5 year rule as of the mid 90s. JohnnyReb - you have NO idea what you are taking about. The 5 years is a *LIFETIME* limit. If you don't believe me, go to a social services branch in the nearest county you can get to and ask. They will tell you no one can bi-pass the 5 year lifetime limit on welfare.
http://www.oregon.gov/DHS/assistance/publications/ors418_131_draftreport.pdf http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welfare_reform (this mentions the 5 year time limit regardless of whether it is consecuative or in incrimnants that welfare is used by an individual).
"Who the hell can't get a job in 5 years" A lot of people do and can... otherwise there is Social Security right? Just because someone gets a job, doesn't mean that they will keep it forever. As they say "shit happens" and sometimes you get screwed and don't know what to do... especially if you have no family to help, a credit card to fall back on or a spouse that has a job. Or what if a single mother has a job but they don't pay for her maternity leave? You get in an accident and end up in medical bankrupcy and losing your job? There are *so many* situations I can't list them all, I have a hard time believing I am being "one sided".

I'm all for it. Helping people is what it's all about. Or should be. They should take the money theyre blowin in Iraq and spend it on poor people. I know squat about the system so thanks for the info
