WHY DO PEOPLE HAVE SUCH A BAD IDEA ABOUT WELFARE?

[+] ballot by ladyshanalyn
created Tue Mar 27, 07

I see people on here griping about welfare and I just want to clear a few things up.

I have been volunteering for years at various domestic violence shelters (in Colorado and Oregon) and so I am quite *aware* of the system and how it works. A few years ago, I walked clients through to get the services they needed... I doubt anything much has changed since then.

1) You can't stay on it forever. There is a 5 year maximum lifetime benefit in place. No matter what state you move to, that time clock follows you and is up after 5 years from the start date.

2) You can only be free of any work/educational activity for 24 months out of the 5 years you receive benefits. This means that you have to work, job search, and go to school or volunteer hours in order to remain eligible for benefits.

3) Most states require that you attend additional classes on budgeting, parenting, job search/resume building, ect. in order to receive benefits and childcare.

A lot of women that I knew needed picking up the pieces of broken mentality and putting their lives back together.

I don't see what the big deal is since this is ultimately working towards having welfare recipient’s job ready and available on the market for hire.

Oh not to mention that the monthly cash payment is not enough to pay rent unless the recipiant lives in a subsidized rental unit.

I don't have a problem with it either, lets face it everyone makes mistakes and everyone needs help. It's the people that abuse it that are irritating, like Jesse's aunt Sue, LOL she was on it for 18 years! That ofcourse was before they changed it so you have to get a job! It was the best thing for aunt sue because the job drug tested her so she had to stop doing drugs and she has been working ever since! I really like her now, i remember 11 years ago she was a sad case and now we're really proud of her!

so using it until you get on your feet is great, it's a step up!MAG_cherri

I was one of those people who didn't understand the welfare system, , until a good friend of mine parents lost their job and I saw the hell they went through just trying to get the basics, now I know better and ashamed actually of the ideas I used to have toward people on assistance .

I heard about families who were on it for generations. is there any way they can bypass that 5 year limit?

I learn something new everyday....

I don't have a problem...I've used it in the past to get by in difficult times.
Most women on welfare are perfectly ready to work, but they're living in cities with lousy day-care services, like shitty Toronto, for example.

Voted : what a one sided ballot
First of all that 5 year limit is in one stretch. Not in a lifetime. Secondly, who the hell cant get a job in 5 years??? And the limit was added only in the last 5-10 years. Dont get me wrong, EVERYBODY needs a little help now and then. But limits are needed and the rercipient should do something for the money besides have more babies($$$)

Welfare, aside from being wealth redistribution, acts as an enabler for irresponsible behavior. Some use it responsibly but they are the minority.
Why should I feel sorry for the recipients who are laughing all the way to the Lexus dealer?
by robotthinker on Tue Mar 27, 07 3:29pm [+]

LCD - No one can by-pass the 5 year rule as of the mid 90s.

JohnnyReb - you have NO idea what you are taking about. The 5 years is a *LIFETIME* limit. If you don't believe me, go to a social services branch in the nearest county you can get to and ask. They will tell you no one can bi-pass the 5 year lifetime limit on welfare.

(this mentions the 5 year time limit regardless of whether it is consecuative or in incrimnants that welfare is used by an individual).

"Who the hell can't get a job in 5 years"

A lot of people do and can... otherwise there is Social Security right? Just because someone gets a job, doesn't mean that they will keep it forever.

As they say "shit happens" and sometimes you get screwed and don't know what to do... especially if you have no family to help, a credit card to fall back on or a spouse that has a job.

Or what if a single mother has a job but they don't pay for her maternity leave? You get in an accident and end up in medical bankrupcy and losing your job? There are *so many* situations I can't list them all, I have a hard time believing I am being "one sided".
