Sometimes humour breaks the deadlock in a serious ballot. Sometimes the humour needs to be slammed in joke ballots. tho people missing the point in a joke ballot forks me off.

A serious ballot treated with INAPPROPRIATE humor would be more frustrating, I think. On the other hand, appropriate humor might not be objectionable.
Conversely.....
Sometimes a user will masquerade a racist or sexist ballot as a joke ballot. Then when someone makes a reasonable comment about this, the ballot maker gets all self righteous and screams, "But it was just a JOKE ballot."

Serious Ballots are cool if you want opinions and inane humor can simply be ignored. It really doesn't diminish the quality of the ballot (though it might alter the accuracy of the result).

On the other hand, joke ballots might really not be funny to some people or just don't conform to an acceptable norm of what's considered funny. In either case, the offensed should be given respect concerning the subjective instance, except in cases where the person is being deliberately obstinate or antaganistic. You get a sense about who is sincere and who's not after a while.

It can be aggrevating to have every ballot subjected to nonsense, but the occational transgression should be overlooked and tolerated. I know it's happened to my ballots before and I'm sure I'm also guilty of doing it myself.
There's not a lot one can do about it though. 1. You can't change other peoplew, and 2. addressing the offending person usually rovokes even more deliberate antagonism. Just come to expect it.

My "P" key mis-fires once in a while. That should read Provokes, not rovokes. lol Sorry.

Seriously, Contragrain, I do not consider it a "faux pas" to deliberately do anything. A "faux pas" by definition is an unintended mis-step. Yes? More to your point: Sometimes, a "serious" ballot is of such a trite subject that it is difficult to treat it seriously, or a "joke" ballot is obviously aimed at putting down some group, belief, or such that it isn't a joke.

Still, we should generally take serious ballots seriously.
by margaret123 on Sat Mar 31, 07 9:49pm [+]

I disagree.

A Faux pas by definition is an action, the RESULT of which is socially and probably, in hindsight , personally regrettable.

The action can be deliberate i.e. the person obviosly didnt write a joke comment by accident, the social acceptability of the outcome, perhaps through ignorance or a lack of thought, could be "accidental" however.
by Doctordraw on Sun Apr 01, 07 3:33am [+]

oh, was this a serious ballot?... I thought that 'Faux Pas' meant a Social Blunder..or a False Start..
by spanky on Sun Apr 01, 07 6:07am [+]

No, "spank," the ballot was neutral. Neither serious or a "joke." Hopefully we can all learn to laugh at our own frustrations. But laughing can have a dead seriousness, albeit right beneath the surface.

Sometimes it frustrates me when people get into an argument with each other that has nothing to do with the subject at hand.
by mojo on Sun Apr 01, 07 9:56am [+]

"Serious ballots treated with inappropriate humor."

That, too.

Doesn't happen to me often, but coincidentally I just wiped one of my own ballots because of this very phenomenon.

No matter how much I dislike a person, I respect it when they are trying to be sincere or serious -- especially when tha ballot concerns something from the personal.

It totally depends on the ballot. I couldn't say unless i knew what ballots were on your mind. I think some serious ballots get humr aded when someone wants to lighten someone up, and if it's not harsh or cruel humor than it's not so bad!

Have an an ice cream cone :) MAG_cone
