SHOULD DON IMUS BE FIRED?

[+] serious ballot by mojo
created Mon Apr 09, 07

Radio show host Don Imus, when talking about a women's basketball team, used the words 'nappy-headed hoes.' Yes, he was kidding around --- should this end his career? Many in the black community are calling for it.

'Loose lips sink ships.' Does this apply here? What do you think?

(p.s. I've never been an Imus fan, but I am interested in what you guys think.)

Yes
No
Those whom he aimed his disguesting remarks at should decide...

No. Know why? Because for all of the false accusations made by the African-American community about supposed race-based crimes, when the accusations were proven to be false, they have never, to my knowledge, apologized. The Duke rape case comes to mind. Where are the apologies from Reverened Al and Jesse Jackson? They're aren't any. There should be. When I was reading about that case, I read reference to a case by a girl named Towana Brawley. In that case, I read that this girl accused a Sheriff AND the DA himself of raping her. Reverened Al Sharpton got on the bandwagon. When it was PROVEN that the girl MADE UP the story because she was afraid of getting in trouble for being out late, they never once said "Ooops, sorry!" SO NO! Don Imus should not be fired.

He said something dumb, but he has apologized. Have they ever? No.

That being said, Don should donate $1 million to the United Negro College fund.
by patch22us on Mon Apr 09, 07 3:55pm [+]

Imus should get fired for being boring and stupid. Someone shouldn't get fired for making offensive remarks, but if his sponsors drop him so will his network.
by RobinGaylord on Mon Apr 09, 07 3:56pm [+]

No. I think that people choose to be offended by things like this. When they do so, in a weird way they accept the insults. When people make a big deal about things like this, they add significance to his words, and accept the fact that they are harmful. If they ignore his words, then he's just some rambling maniac.

I think Imus desperately wants to be like Rush Limbaugh clone.

I never listen to the guy, but he sure tries hard to be on the headline.
by LCD on Mon Apr 09, 07 4:09pm [+]

I could care less, but his brother Fred (who still owes me money from Fred's Autobody) needs to have ass kicked.
by elvislennon on Mon Apr 09, 07 4:19pm [+]

I just heard Jesse Jackson and Armstrong Williams weigh in on this one.

Personally, I can't stand Imus, and I usually can't stand Armstrong Williams, but the latter just made a couple of good points, incredibly.

I've watched his show a few times and sporadically listened to comments made on that show (on the radio) before I retired and I don't think he should be fired although many may believe he should be...I think he had a "brain fart" and truly didn't realize the ramifications of what he said would reverate and maybe bring back that touchy subject of racism again...the larger the position of influence you are in, the more responsible you have to be...then, there's the double standard of allowing or never addressing derogatory remarks made by members of certain minority groups against themselves and others of their group...these actions should be discouraged no matter who is saying them neighbor, rapper, or radio/tv personalty.

I can understand people taking offense to what he said and being angry. It was over the top imo.I also think that he was sincere in his apology.I think that it was out of character for him and a big mistake.I don't think he should be fired but again I understand the anger of others.

Predictably out come the media clowns Sharpton and Jackson to capitalize. When will people have enough of these two?

Out of a cannon, into the Sun. I'd love to ask him how he'd feel if someone referred to *his* wife or daughter (if he *has* any, that is) as a "nappy-headed h*e". It's not a racial thing to me, but a human-consideration thing. "Do unto others..." Still don't ascribe to the faith, but I like the idea.

If he goes then many other newscasters should go.
by UncleMax on Mon Apr 09, 07 6:34pm [+]

if he's fired then he won't have to stand up and be an example, he'll be getting out easy. Dummy needs a chance to try to redeem himself maybe.... maybe.. But Forget it, they told on the news tonight what he said about Gwen Ifill, and she's so far above his loud piggyness, he deserves to be wiped out for THAT comment, even though Gwen probably never even heard it.. 'different circles' you know..
by Jyl on Mon Apr 09, 07 6:37pm [+]

No, he should not be fired. If they are going to allow Dave Chappel, Chris Rock, etc, make racially charged jokes and not say a thing about it, then they should accept it if everyone says it. Sorry, that's just how it is, if you don't want others to say it, don't say it yourself.

I don't even care much for Imus, but dammit, people need to decide what's funny and what's racist based on what is being said, NOT on who is saying it.
by jappy on Mon Apr 09, 07 9:47pm [+]

Jappy makes an interesting point.

It reminded me of that movie by the Wayans brothers a couple of years ago, I believe it was called White Chicks. It wasn't exactly a flattering portrayal of white girls, but no one was saying it should end their career. In fact, they were feted on Oprah, as I remember.

NO! He didn't use a racial slur, he didn't break a law. He violated his employers on air policy. A suspension is appropriate.

Al Sharpton and other Black complainers are a bunch of hypocrites. You don't hear them complaining about blacks CONSTANTLY referring to Black women as bitches and whores in their music, comedy skits and movies.

The have lost all crediblity for their arguments.

It's time to stop lynching WHITE people for saying the same things Black say themselves.

They should clean up their own race before they complain.

I always thought that listening to Don Imus talk is almost as interesting as watching him chew gum.

Of course, out come the uppity race-baiters like Al Sharpton. Perhaps he should spend more time preaching to basketball players not to look like thug skanks.
by _Beelzebubba on Tue Apr 10, 07 9:01am [+]

Oh and by the way. When was a last time a BLACK person got fired for making offensive comments.

We just had an Black actor of the TV say nasty things about gays. Ad how about the football player who recently said he HATED gays.

Well did those two guys lose their jobs? Did you hear any Black people complain about it. NO! The Black people made EXCUSES for them. The same excuses that are being made for Imus.

Shut the hell up Black people you hypocrites.
by Grapost on Tue Apr 10, 07 12:22pm [+]

No. From my understanding of Imus, he insults people from all walks of life. And he's a humorist (supposedly). I think the reaction is overkill. No one should be fired for making one rude remark.

I do agree that there is a double standard, and that blacks get away with saying things that a white person never could. I don't have a problem with black comedians insulting whites, but whites should also be able to mock blacks.

Then, of course, the professional shakedown artists like Al "Tawana" Sharpton and Jesse "Adulterer" Jackson get involved so they can get a little more TV face time and maybe shake some funding loose.

It makes me want to run up and down the sidewalk shouting "nigger, nigger, nigger!"
by cranky on Tue Apr 10, 07 12:50pm [+]

(what he said about Gwen was just stupid, not funny in the least. but of course that's a comment no one cared about)

Alot of interesting comments above...Imus apology was not worth the time spent making it and others hearing it. Why apologize? He said what he meant and he meant what he said...

To point the finger at others and not require Imus to take responsibility for his insulting comments is not productive in the scheme of things. Everyone is responsible for their own actions and to blame others for that person's actions removes that person off the hook who put themselves on the hook in the first place.

I would venture to say if you historically and systemically have been and continue to be depicted by some of the members of the majority as being less than what your really are, you may be a tad sensitive and/or fed up...I don't understand the criticism of those who object to this bum's comments.

As for the comedians who go beyond the line of decency, they aren't any better than Imus. However, Imus is the filth that is making the news at the moment because he couldn't cease his continuous insults of others...

Pesonally, I really don't care what happens to him, we all in the end get what we put out into the universe...I guess its his turn at getting what he put out
by Barbara_Baby_Cakes on Tue Apr 10, 07 9:28pm [+]

I would be offened if I were those women. If you listen to the booadcast you would see the undertones, he compared them with the girls on the other team who were white said that they were cuter and then someone else made another comment that it was jigaboos vs the other...i was horrified when i heard the whole thing in context...awful
by smallreds on Fri Apr 13, 07 3:30pm [+]

It makes you want to check up on how often a black commentator or comedian referred to whites as honky or cracker. Sharpton and Jackson have been known to make homophobic and anti jewish remarks. The hip hop culture celebrates profanity and thuggish behavior and blacks trying to get ahead in school are run down by their peers. My girlfriend was watching Oprah and it was good to finally see some black leaders speaking out about it on there. If Imus is punished alot of others need to be too.
