Yet again, another subscription to the Myth of the Gun, that one brave soul would've been able to whip out his own piece and take down the perp before any loss of life occurred. Couldn't be farther off the mark here. John and Joan Public are *not* hard-wired to use firearms in a life-or-death sitch. All the training in the world can't prepre anyone for the moment when the bullets start to fly. And I a, for the record, *not* in favor of gun control, but a proponent of gun registration. I want to know who has a gun and where they live, so I can avoid the area.

I have to go on record by stating I am not a proponent of carrying weapons on the street. I felt it necessecary to create a ballot to present an alternative thought process to the inevitable wave of "ban the gun" ballots which have begun to hit the pages of best and worst.

Well, firstly I will state that I am not in favor of people carrying guns around in public. The thought scares me.

However, I would further like to randomly point out something as it is a pet peeve of mine. You cannot call something a "myth" just for shits and giggles. Nor can you claim that in a life and death situation someone carrying a gun wouldn't use it. That is, after all, why they are carrying it. I've seen people do remarkable things under stress.

Blanket statements made by smart people = pet peeve! Sorry! Live with it!

P.S.- Hitler was a jackass.

I will only say that semi automatics and other rapid-fire weapons should be banned. Anything that could be used in legitimate self defense should be allowed, though.
by skylab on Tue Apr 17, 07 9:06pm [+]

How about if guns were not legally available? Seeing as Mr Cho legally obtained his guns it seems likely that the massacre would not have occurred had he not had a gun to kill people with.

Canada has strict gun control, but the same thing happened in Montreal in 1989 and 14 women were killed while at school. I agree with gun control and don't feel anyone needs to carry one around everywhere.

Any public building should have guards and metal detectors - I agree with TheNewGirl on this.

No-one but law enforcers should be able to carry a gun into a mall, hospital, school, workplace wherever.

Guns are not big or clever. They are dumb, idiotic and deadly.
by wideheadofknowledge on Wed Apr 18, 07 8:33am [+]

NewGirl- Did you see that video a few weeks ago of the woman who walked into a hospital wearing scrubs and carrying a large bag, and then found a baby to put in the bag and walked out? That was insane. O_O

It's interesting that the poster came from the Jews For The Preservation of Firearms Ownership, Inc.

Do those people really believe that if the German Jews had all carried guns during the 1930's that they could have singlehandedly defeat Hitler?
by cranky on Wed Apr 18, 07 9:18am [+]

Nate, nobody in my vicinity is either sh*tting or giggling. It's just my way of phrasing it. I agree with you entirely in saying that some have accomplished amazing things under stress. I'm not willing to chance that when it comes to a loaded weapon. I've seen experts put people in graves with them.

It would've certainly deterred the Nazis from trying anything when the public can shoot back.
by Daughter_of_Khitai on Wed Apr 18, 07 3:14pm [+]

No because someone would be able to shoot back!

Hopefully not some imbred redneck moron though, but they should have security at all times, ARMED security

Daughter:

I don't think that, generally, the fascist army, police, militias, and vigilantes of a rightwing police state have much to fear from a ragtag bunch of armed shopkeepers and students.
by cranky on Thu Apr 19, 07 7:08am [+]

But they would have a great dal to fear from being outnumbered by hundreds to one by an armed population. It wouldn't only be shopkeepers and students, it would also be retired cops, ex-military, gun club members, farmers (who are usually very good shots), and they would thoroughly outnumber the govt's own forces. That's something to keep a government at least trying to appear democratic.
by Daughter_of_Khitai on Thu Apr 19, 07 6:54pm [+]

According to the documentary "Innocents Betrayed", 170 million civilians have been murdered by their own governments in the 20th century alone. Men, women, and children who were defenceless to protect themselves. That's 170,000,000 victims of gun control. If a govt can't trust it's own citizens to own guns, then neither can those citizens trust their govt.
