SHOULD THE NEWS MEDIA AIR THE CHO VIDEO AND PHOTOS?

[+] ballot by Mithrandir

The ratings were great for those networks who chose to air the video. However, because there was so much coverage of it, it was hard to choose not to watch it, unless you chose to just turn your television off completely. Some say the video holds insight into the mind of a killer - I can't see that much. Others say that it incites copy-cat crimes of the same caliber from unbalanced people who could feed off the media frenzy and the pseudo celebrity status the same way Cho obviously did. Or somehow legitimizes it. Or puts the emphasis of the story on the sensationalism of the crime, and not on the victims.

I personally think it was gratuitous sensationalism that brought no value to any news story. The videos are available on the Internet for those who wish to make the extra of smidgeon of effort to see them - so I can't really see it's a question of censorship or freedom of speech - what speech is being suppressed?

Yes, great for ratings, and people can choose not to watch
No, puts sick violence into public consciousness for no good reason

We all know that it's there. For the truly sick bastiches who *want* to drool over this, it's available on a dozen torrents as I type. Let them go find it. Leave those of us with a modicum of decency to go on with the task of living.

Turn off the Goddamned Television! There's nothing but Hogshit on it anyway..There's a clever new invention out now it's called a Book and not many people know how to use them...be the first on your Block to hold a child in your lap and show 'em how Books work. The Media 'Crisis of the Moment' will soon pass and before you know it you will have created that most Dangerous of individuals,- a Reader! (the crowd gasps!)

Good ballot. This choice not to watch thing means you do indeed have to turn your tv off. Thats not really freedom is it? The fact that a child may watch it isnt freedom either. its designed to get a reaction from the lowest common demnominator. ie stupid people. If you know this then you would avoid it if it was an easy thing to do. but its not. How many times did we see 9/11? did it help? or did it desensitise the whole thing?

I'm not suggesting that all americans just assumed they were watching a film.

But it certainly makes you wonder just who is telling us the news... and whats in it for them....

To clarify tho I think this sort of thing should never be shown on normal tv. it may be a right of freedom to watch whatever you want but its also equaly true of the right not to have to constantly have to turn of our tv so as not to alienate the sick bastards in society.
