They blow themselves up as you put it because it is the most effective weapon at their disposal.
Suicide bombing started with the Hizbolah in Lebanon. The Hizbolah used it as an effective weapon to drive the Israelis out of Lebanon. Israel had the benefit of arms supplied by the US, these included fighter jets, attack helicopters and hellfire missiles. The only effective response against such superior force was suicide bombings and it clearly works. Hellfire missiles and attack helicopters are designed to inflict terror and mass casualties, as can be seen regularly in the occupied territories, suicide bombers are the poor mans hellfire missile. Different delivery system, same outcome, terror and mass casualties.
