I think they set people back and retard healthy mental development. It's annoying to debate someone and have them say they won't discuss the validity of their religious beliefs because it's a "sacred" belief they have, that cannot be questioned. Yet religion is one of the many sacred cows that demands questioning. When the pope decrees that condoms are against god's will in AIDS ridden Africa. He is directly posing a threat to the lives of millions. Why is it then wrong to question whether the institution that put him in power is legitimate or that their claims are valid? When a person puts up a mental block and says I will no longer question this any further than I have, they are admitting defeat to ignorance and choose doctrines over facts.
