WASHINGTON -- Military planners have abandoned the idea that training Iraqi troops will enable U.S. troops to start coming home and now say American forces will have to defeat the insurgents and secure control of troubled provinces.
Training Iraqi troops, which had been the cornerstone of the Bush administration's Iraq policy since 2005, has dropped in priority, officials in Baghdad and Washington said.

No change has been announced, and a Pentagon spokesman, Col. Gary Keck, said training Iraqis remains important.
"We are just adding another leg to our mission," Keck said, referring to the greater U.S. role in establishing security that new troops arriving in Iraq are to undertake.

Although President George W. Bush said in a speech Friday in East Grand Rapids that Iraqi forces are leading the attacks on insurgents, evidence has been building for months that training those troops is no longer the focus of U.S. policy and that the troops have been ineffective.

Pentagon officials said they know of no new training resources in U.S. plans to dispatch 28,000 more troops to Iraq.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they aren't allowed to publicly discuss the policy. Defense Secretary Robert Gates made no public mention of training Iraqis when he visited Iraq on Thursday.

In a reflection of the need for more U.S. troops, the Pentagon decided earlier this month to increase the length of Army tours in Iraq from 12 months to 15 months. The extension came amid speculation that the U.S. commander there, Army Gen. David Petraeus, will ask that the troop increase be maintained well into next year.

This is a major news story from last week that was TOTALLY BURIED. Yes, we had a tragedy at VA Tech, but that's no excuse for the media to ignore this.

I thought the main reason our troops were in Iraq was to help them create their own democracy, and help them build a professional military so they could handle their own problems. Now we are no longer funding this effort? Just further exhausting our own resources in an endless, and seemingly futile, war?

What do you think?

Outrageous. When is the Bush administration going to answer for its sins?
GET THE HELL OUT!

COMMENTS:
This administration speaks volumes with it's apathy. I knew there was a problem with the Iraq invasion the moment I heard Bush say he was no longer concerned with Bin Laden only six months after 9-11. Bush is not concerned with pulling out of Iraq or helping them to gain independence otherwise this would be priority one. If he gave a shit about our troops he would do all he could to reduce the risk they have in being a primary police force in Iraq. Further more this proves that the Bush administration is less concerned with bringing Iraq independence and freedom than securing oil bids for the lobbyists that put him in power.

If there is a gradual withdrawal of American troops, I wonder if Iraqis will stop trying to get us to do everything for them and take on more responsibility for running their own country?

They still believe they can lie their way out of this mess, and that if they can just kill enough Iraqis, when the dust clears, there will be enough stability to allow oil companies to start confiscating the oil. And what could make Bush-Cheney even more stubborn is the recent discovery that that the oil reserves in Iraq may be twice the amount of previous estimates.

Whatever happens, it's bad news for the people in Iraq.
