Does you or anyone you're close to have an autistic child? Just want to know how common this is.

My 5 year old was diagnosed with autism and something else :( and well, not much is worse than finding out your kid has this, it's so depressing

Anyone else's kid have this or any type of mild retardation?

Friends of mine have an autistic child. She is beautiful and defies all stereotypes of this disorder. It does break your heart because the parents are so brave and are looking at a lifetime struggle. 1-166 children are born autistic. So sad.
by margaret123 on Thu May 03, 07 2:46pm [+]

It is really sad Margaret....it's actually 1 in 150 now, and i assume getting worse :(

It's difficult because they really don't have much support that i can find. Some of the parents of these kids don't even seem to care and then there are some, like us, that want to do everything they can.

*so depressed*

Retardation is not a word I would use to describe autistic kids, they are increadably bright children that are not really given the credit they deserve and my son is my son regardless of his needs, if anyone around me cant treat him as an equal then it is they who have the problem.

Totally agree Minni, but i found out my child is not only autistic but has mild retardation :(

The cause of Autism must be environmental because very few of the parents of autistic kids are autistic themselves - meaning it's not hereditary. Therefore, what's going on? What's causing this epidemic?

don't let psychiatrist dictate and classify your child!

Let him develop, and keep a close eye on his growth. Treat him different, and he will be different. Treat him the same, and he will catch up, heck, we all have handicaps in life.

I have read that, for some reason not yet known, autistic children tend to be extremely attractive.

Another interesting thing....there was a TV show about a woman who was an autistic child, but with the help of intuitive parents who understood her body language, she was helped to lead a normal life. She said when she was a child, she heard everything at once and was not able to separate sounds. She said the noise was terrible and this is why she and possibly other autistic children cover their ears or touch their ears or head alot. She said repetitious motion was calming in all the noise.
by forgetmenot on Fri May 04, 07 1:27am [+]

I have to agree with LCD, I taught my son to fit in with society and not let society fit in around him, it was hard work but it paid off in the end. My sister has a child with a severe mental handicap, she's 23 now but has the mind of a two year old, she allows this child to do whatever she wants and wont disipline her on the grounds that "she doesnt understand what she's doing", so Sam is now seen by many as a "brat" how will she ever understand if she is never taught? Spend time with these children, they need a lot of love and attention, not to mention patience, but by doing so the rewards not just for the child, but for the parents too are so great. Some children will never progress beyond a certain limit, but that doesnt mean we have to give up on them and stifle their progress in the process.

Thimerisol, or mercury, in vaccines is known to cause it. I think they still use it as a preservative, and you have to ASK them to give your child a vaccine with that in it. rolleyes
by mojo on Fri May 04, 07 6:49am [+]

I meant, NOT to give it to your child
by mojo on Fri May 04, 07 6:49am [+]

don't forget the mercury amalgam that they use in tooth fillings!

what the hell were they thinking, and why the hell are they still using it in dentistry?
by LCD on Fri May 04, 07 4:28pm [+]

Yeah i don't think he's even all that autistic OR mentally impaired, he seems totally normal except that he can't talk much, nobody would even suspect he WAS...

He's pottytrained and all that too, so it's not like i'll be physically taking care of him his whole life, and i have high hopes for him!
