What's cobbler? In Boston it's a shoe repairman. I've heard of peach cobbler, and I'm guessing it's some sort of pie.

It's like a pie without the bottom crust. In the south, they're usually cooked by putting the batter in the bottom of the pan and putting the fruit and juice on top. That way the batter gets spiked with some of the fruit flavor. During baking, the batter rises to the top to form the crust.
In some other places the batter is put on top and then baked. Or sometimes arranged in strips on top and cooked on the stove in an iron skillet.
