SHOULD CORPORATIONS HAVE ETHICAL RESPONSIBILITIES?

Should the only responsibility of a corporation be to make a profit, and to stay within the law?

What about drug companies that sell life-saving medication to third world nations at a huge profit, what about weapons manufacturers that sell to the highest bidder, when all signs point to genocide or terrorism or just enemies of their own government, what about oil companies, or tobacco companies or fast food companies that help endanger the planet and the health of their clients, just to make money?

Corporations aren't people, and can't be responsible for ethics
Corporations are the basis of the economy - nothing to do with ethics
Ethics are intangible - what is "ethical" one year will change the next year
You can't legislate ethics
There should be a code of ethics to protect public interests

COMMENTS:
Unfortunately, companies will do anything to make a profit. I'm not exaggerating. they'd even sell crack. I know this because cocaine and heroin was mixed into all kind of ever day house hold medicine and soft drinks before it was made illegal. They destroy the environment regularly and as long as idiots by from corporations with unethical practices they will not stop committing atrocities. By the way Coca cola and IBM sold products to the Nazi's during WWII, that's all that has to be said.

"By the way Coca cola ... sold products to the Nazi's during WWII..."

RobinG, I may be wrong, but I read somewhere that the Nazis kicked Coca Cola out of Germany and set up a German soft drink factory at the Coca Cola facility. The German soda was named Fanta (from the German word fantasia) but was bought by Coke after the war. I don't know how long after the war - 10? 20? 30 year after? I'm not sure.

Corporations ARE legal people. They do have responsibilities to the people and environments within which they exist. To imagine it otherwise, is to imagine a world at constant war, digging and clawing for resouces, with no regard for human life. Oh, that's how it is, isn't it? My bad.

I think there should be a basic code of ethics for every organization. That doesn't mean they should go broke by being ethical, but ethics has its place.
