TEXAS REPRESENTATIVE QUOTES KKK GRAND WIZARD ON THE FLOOR OF THE HOUSE

[+] serious ballot by cranky
ACTIVE Wed May 09, 07 - Mon Feb 01, 10

Wash. Times omits mention of Forrest as KKK leader.

In a speech on the House floor on Monday, Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX) (mis)quoted “successful Confederate general” Nathan Bedford Forrest, but left out the fact that Forrest was also one of the original Grand Wizards of the Ku Klux Klan.

Today, the Washington Times has a similar omission:

“Does anybody realize there’s a war going on out there in the desert sands of Iraq and the rough mountains of Afghanistan? Apparently not, or Congress would be taking care of our troops,” reacts Rep. Ted Poe, Texas Republican.

The congressman quotes Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, a respected cavalry leader who said about winning: “Get there firstest with the mostest.”

Do you feel inspired to support Bush's Iraq War efforts after hearing words of wisdom from one of the founding members, and original Grand Wizards, of the Ku Klux Klan?

The source of the quote isnt really relevant. Whats relevant is the wisdom of the quote and the context its used in.

Apparently the guy was a "respected cavalry leader", and subsequently knows a thing or two about winning (although the quite seems rather shit IMO), thats the important thing.

"That's Ted Poe's claim to fame," sneered, he makes folks wear sandwich boards and walk around the street."

" Whats relevant is the wisdom of the quote and the context its used in"

I agree to some extent.

since I never heard of Ted Poe, I can't say what context he MEANT to say it, but if he said "successful confederate general" referring to Forrest, then whoever was writing his speech wanted him to look like a fool.

And remember, at least cranky didn't associate him with all white americans in general, and how they are connected to the KKK.

that's why he is still here, and others are not.

Give him time.

That's not what I said, that's what Allen Blakemore said. The word Blackmore put out on Poe was that he was not a great legal mind and made his reputation on his sentencing. In other words, he was painting Poe as thick poser.
I'm sure Poe isn't thick but I'm also certain he wasn't great jurist.

By the way, I applaud Poe for realizing that social shame is an effective way of realizing the consequences of crime.

The King Alfred doth protest too much, methinks... what's up, running late for the meeting?

^Typical liberal ad-hominem attack. I question whether the source of a quote is really as/more important than its wisdom, whether the source is a ku klux klan or not, and I get called a kkk member myself.

Ironically, liberals are the ones who profess to believe in equal treatment for all human beings, as well as peoples right to express themselves, yet are the first to analyse a mans race, religion or creed rather than his words.

Its called the fallacy of guilt by association, and its every liberals ace in the hole.

"Be kind to animals." - Adolf Hitler.

Ah, the wisdom of this quote is so great that it should be printed on posters and placed in every classroom in the Western World.
by cranky on Wed May 09, 07 1:45pm [+]

can we forget all that and focus on the really important issue in all this? good.

so the big question is -- how do those nifty klansmen keep their sheets so white!? all america wants to know. gotta hand it to them, they keep their whites white and their colors bright! (no pun intended)

Your comment is somewhat ambiguous in its intent Cranky.

You have the tone of someone being facetious, yet you have just given a perfect example of what im saying. Few people would deny that you should be kind to animals, and the fact that Hitler said that (if he did) doesnt detract from its worth in any way. In the unlikely case that a thousand other people hadnt said the same four words it would be fair for me to quote Hitler on that without being branded a racist.
by kingAlfredTheGreat on Wed May 09, 07 2:37pm [+]

Hello Al, I guess you made it back from the meeting.

"somewhat ambiguous"
It is either ambigous or it isn't--similar to saying "very unique."
typical conservative--illiterate
by elvislennon on Wed May 09, 07 2:58pm [+]

I disagree. I think it would be inappropriate for a U.S. Congressman to get up in front of the House and quote Hitler, regardless of the topic.
by cranky on Wed May 09, 07 3:00pm [+]

And if a Democratic Congressman got up and quoted from Marx, regardless of how benign the comment was, the rightwing propagandists on the Fascist News Network would be howling bloody murder.
by cranky on Wed May 09, 07 3:02pm [+]

Hello elvis, I guess you didnt read my last comment? Otherwise you would realise what a twat your unfounded allegations of an association with the KKK make you appear.

"It is either ambigous or it isn't--similar to saying "very unique." "

Not at all. Somewhat ambiguous is the equivalent of saying" I THINK I know what you are saying, but I cant quite be certain". You see? Its amusing to see individuals of limited intelligence try to maipulate the english language, like watching a chimp tea party.

Typical liberal = thick as shit.

But you most definitely ARE a liberal.

No. For those that didn't know, Forrest also was reponsible for a Fort Pillow massacre of East Tennesseans and black Union troops, and various Confederates claimed that Forrest shot escaped slaves, including women and children.
