They're used by shopowners to keep teenagers away from stores. The idea behind them is that people over the age of 20 can't hear frequencies higher than 18kHz, but people under 20 can hear frequencies as high as 20kHz. I'm 31 and I can hear an 18,500 kHz frequency loud and clear. Mosquitoes are currently being used by many British retailers.
