The wearing of wedding rings is fairly recent (if you consider WWII recent, that is). Women who married men before they shipped off overseas wore rings to display their commitment to their absent men.

I believe that a wedding ring, worn by either a man or a woman, is a subtle, but simple statement: "I'm taken." Interesting topic.
