Sometimes it can be a useful way of quickly identifying who you mean. For instance, if you wanted to make a remark about one white guy in a group of black guys, it would be a lot quicker to identify him by his most obvious physical difference, rather than describing deatures of his appearance that the black guys may also have, such as facial features or clothing.

If it's used descriptively and not in a derogatory manner, I have no problem with it.

Different people are different colors. That's life.

You really want to see someone offended? Do what my sister-in-law did when she told her nephew "not to say that word" when he referenced a "black lady" that was selling cookies at a table out side of the local grocery store. To see the look on the woman's face after she saw my sis-in-law shhsh her nephew; it was like my sis-in-law was insinuating that there was something wrong with recognizing someone's color.
