Voted : People who apply for these jobs have no idea what they're getting into
I think that a lot of people who apply for these jobs glibly say "Sure, I can help people, no problem." But aren't prepared for having to listen to everyone's problems all day nonstop.
^ but THEY aren't prepared

While I agree that hotline workers ae sometimes incompetent -- I'd say the majority were good. What's the evidence for "so many" being incompetent?
I've heard many more bad things about them than good things.
i don't know nuck. but i do have to laugh -- imagine ramadung as a crisis hotline guy "pull the trigger, don't pull the trigger, just bugger off ya' cunt!" sorry. not a dig at him at all -- but just picture it.
Seriously, Kev, some of them aren't much better than that.
^ that's sad. there should be very strict guidelines before someone takes on such a serious role. i actually have a friend who is bi-polar and she was havig a really rought time one night and said she called one -- after about 10 minutes the lady on the other end said "well, it looks like we can't be of any assitance to you and i have to go now." she hung up on my friend. that's just wrong.
What kind of hotlines are we talking hear? Suicide? Drugs? Spousal abuse? How does one measure the competency of the workers?
How does one measure the competency of the workers? So many of them just tell people off and take on a "Why are you bothering me?" attitude, it's pretty obvious with many of them.

I'm thinking burnout in this case. If too amny people start leaning on someone, even the strongest will shatter. Personal experience talking here.
Voted : I haven't had problems here in PA
They've been there when I needed them, and for that I'm thankful.
^I don't get it. What's with the pancakes on the bunny's head? Is this more of that British humour?
Lol, I don't know what it means, I found it in google pics. Just thought it was funny.
