President Hails Deal on Immigration Reform

WASHINGTON (May 18) - In a striking reach across party lines, the White House and key lawmakers agreed Thursday on a sweeping immigration plan to grant legal status to millions of people in the country unlawfully.

President Bush said the proposal would "help enforce our borders but equally importantly, it'll treat people with respect."

The compromise brought together an unlikely alliance of liberal Democrats such as Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts and conservative Republicans such as Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona on an issue that carries heavy potential risks and rewards for all involved.

Conservatives on both sides of the Capitol derided the deal as "amnesty" for illegal immigrants, using a politically charged word that figured prominently in campaigns across the country last year.

"I don't care how you try to spin it, this is amnesty," said Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C.

The proposed agreement would allow illegal immigrants to come forward and obtain a "Z visa" and - after paying fees and a $5,000 fine - ultimately get on track for permanent residency, which could take between eight and 13 years. Heads of households would have to return to their home countries first.

Mitt Romney, another Republican presidential hopeful, issued a statement calling the plan "the wrong approach," saying it conferred "a form of amnesty" on illegal immigrants. "That is unfair to the millions of people who have applied to legally immigrate to the U.S.," the former Massachusetts governor said. (AP)

COMMENTS:
It seems very complicated. Reading some news stories, it seems so, reading others, it doesn't. I'm confused.

If it walks like a duck, but what's wrong with the "WORD" amnesty? What's the definition of amnesty in the dictionary?

: the act of an authority (as a government) by which pardon is granted to a large group of individuals
— amnesty

Isn't that what this bill does?

^ I just reread the ballot, the bill is a little confusing, hmmmm, I don't know

It includes tighter border controls, workplace enforcement and a path to citizenship, which is a compromise approach.
by skylab on Fri May 18, 07 7:32am [+]

But the emphasise on skill and education as requirements for citizenship could leave some families divided.

Why can't they just come out and say it? It's like they keep pissing on your back and tell you that it's just raining.

It looks now like our open-door policy has just become a red-carpet policy.

^George W. Bush and Sen. Jon Kyle, of Arizona, aren't liberals. So how do you explain the Republican support?
by cranky on Fri May 18, 07 9:07am [+]

The liberals love it because the bill empowers foreigners. The big-money conservatives love it because their corporations can hire cheap labor and not pay benefits.

It's a win-win situation...

(Except for the middle class worker bees like us.)

Republicans have to *say* that they oppose amnesty to gain votes, but in reality the more immigrants the better, as a source of cheap labour for rich republican compnay owners who dont have to live the areas swamped with immigrants themselves.

i don't think so. besides, most immigration rights groups and the illegal immigrants themselves are not happy with it. it's stricter than the mainstream press is reporting.
by Kev24 on Fri May 18, 07 10:46am [+]

"It'll treat people with respect" OMG is he crazy? Most of them don't even respect this country!

I've got all illegal neighbors surrounding me minus the white dude next door that is moving, outside blaring their mariache as i type!

I couldn't even back my freakin truck out because the mexicans toddlers were running across the STREET and i had to WAIT for CUNTSUELLA to stop chatting with her fat illegal friend in spanish and GET the kids before i ran them over!

*grrr*

by socal_sweetie on Fri May 18, 07 11:54am [+]

Actually, I'm more conservative on immigration than on most things. Ironically, I support amnesty in the future, because I don't think it's realistic to send 11 million people out of the country when they don't want to go.

And what is being enacted with this bill is a form of amnesty. But, putting amnesty into law BEFORE sealing the border and actually enforcing laws against employers is going to create a land rush of more illegals into the U.S., probably in the millions. But Bush's buddies will love that: more cheap, exploitable labor.
by cranky on Fri May 18, 07 12:38pm [+]

TNG:

What more do I need? Without the support of Jorge W. Bush and the Republican Senator from Arizona, this bill would have never become law.

Viva Bush!
by cranky on Fri May 18, 07 12:40pm [+]

Why don't they send the 11 million illegals that are HERE to go fight this silly war for us?
by socal_sweetie on Fri May 18, 07 1:35pm [+]

I have a question: would things really be different under dems?
by aya on Fri May 18, 07 2:15pm [+]

^ Probably not aya...

Hey Cranky! don't waste your breath, it hasn't penetrated through the first layer...

I say to those who would like to send the so call illegals back to Mexico, as soon as the last illegal leave this country, are you willing to get out in the fields, bend over and get to picking and I am not talking about your noses?

No matter your opinion of whether this bill sounds like amnesty or not, the point is, who here is prepared to do the dirty work if you wake up tomorrow and all the illegals are gone, who, which one of you who oppose the illegals being in this country will suit up and commence to picking?

Oh gee, is that TNG hand I see raised way in the back of the room? Oh, no, of course not, she was merely stretching after a loooooong day debating/supporting all the lies told by her pathetic President, nevermind...

Of course, as usual, excellent ballot Cranky!

BBC,

you could probably get those who are on welfare to work these small jobs. After all, allowing amnesty will depress wages

But there are a huge number of illegal Mexicans. And while some come in search of a better life, many are also responsible for a lot of crime and gangs in the States
by aya on Fri May 18, 07 6:20pm [+]
