DO WE REALLY CARE?

If so, there is a lot more we can do to help

I’m sitting here using high speed internet, which I probably could down grade to dial up and live just fine, or instead of digital tv, I could live just as well with standard cable, a lot of unnecessary little things that could feed entire villages.

I’m a bit of a hypocrite, I preach feed the world, but in reality if I really cared that much, I could do more without affecting my life dramatically, if at all.

Many celebrities and people of means, always saying feed the hungry and I know some give much money for that cause, but even they have many unnecessary luxuries, I’m sure they care about poverty in the world, like me but at a much higher pay scale, have luxuries that are unnecessary.

With the exception of a handful, most people who say do more to help the poor, don’t actually down grade their own lifestyle to do that.

Sure it’s great that Oprah built that school in Africa or Madonna helping the poor, but do you think if doing that meant they had to down grade their lifestyle, they still would? Maybe, but I wonder.

My dad and I are not rich by any stretch of the word, I cry over the cost of my medication, which is mostly paid by my dad not me, I could help him more by down grading and using that money for my medicine , he works all the time so he doesn’t get that much use out of these things, and what is sad, he is working those extra hours for my expenses, including the ones that are unnecessary.

Maybe I’ve been awakened, I can do more to help him, for example instead of going to University for my studies in the fall, I could do my training at local hospital and save thousands of dollars.

Do you think that is true with you as well, do you have extra things that make your life a little bit better but really not necessary?

Yes
No
No, I need my MTV
No, not my job to feed the world
I give, but have no intentions of giving up my HBO to save the life of someone I don't know
I donate and give away stuff when i can

COMMENTS:
Also, do you think people of means would or do down grade their lifestyle to feed the poor?

Back when I had the means to give, I did give regularly. Now I'm living on less than six hundred a month.

As for the world, I think we care, but too many of us need to have it pointed out to us (the need to give to those in need, I mean). And, even then, we still don't take directions well.

And, to answer your question in Comments, I doubt it seriously. Too many of means think that either the token gifts they mae or the mere impetus of thier name recognition will drive others, too ften those who *don't* have the means, to give.

I could get rid of my YMCA membership, car (and get a bike instead) but that is the only "luxury items" that I really have anymore. We haven't has cable for years and have had $10.00 dial up for years as well...

I give locally, I would *LOVE* to do more worldly, shit I could send $ 20 a month to a family overseas in extreme poverty. I guess I don't know of reputable organzations that help with that (let me know if you do).

I know exactly how you feel Larry, my experience has been pure frustration because I have no clue where to start, or how to go about it.

Yes, we have a shitload of unnecessary things...but nothing we don't use and we're by no means well off but like even yesterday my husband had to go buy another bmx bike, it's a nice diamondback Skindog and we are getting about 300 dollars in tattoos next week so yeah, it seems we overdo it. I DO donate to shelters all the time though, and i think we give alot. We don't throw anything away, we fill up the bed of the truck and bring al the stuff to this church for the homeless...so we try...

But i won't give my money to that fat Sally Struthers bitch, because my money goes DIRECTLY to them, and there's enough homeless near me to do that. I give to needy kids, we gave a woman 10 bucks last month for her "kids" but it probably went to drugs, i like giving it to the KIDS, like some of the kids are like 8 to maybe 13 and i pic kkids that are sweet mannered, not thuggish.

when my kids are older i'm gonna buy skateboards for homeless and very needy kids in America...kind of like Mike Valelly does (a famous pro skater)
