It's not very popular to be a vocal racist right now, so I don't hear white people using that word too often. All my friends think the word is tacky and rude. The only time I do hear it is when a car drives down the road blasting rap music. It's even rarer that I hear any other racist expletives no matter what race they refer to.
If I didn't want someone to use a word I wouldn't use it myself, much less write a song where I use it over and over again with the intention of it becoming a top 40 hit that will be heard by everyone. What do you think?
If it wasn't for rap music would the n-word have fallen out of common usage by now?

Yes
No

The N-word never lost its popularity among white 'necks and other racists.

I tend to think so, since no one in my family or my circle has ever used that word -- but I've been told I'm sheltered, so probably Cranky is right.

cranky- I agree. Racists would still use that word. My question was whether it would fall out of common usage or not.

and absolutely not...

Rap doesn't keep that disgusting word alive (although it doesn't help the situation at hand), it is used in the board rooms, the streets, on this site, in the homes of not only so call rednecks, in homes of doctors, lawyers, attorneys, politicians, etc, etc, etc...

It perplex me when people continue to imply that rap music is the continual cause and effect of that word upon American society...

Your so call decent Americans perpetuate that word, passes it down to their all american children to toy with as their parents, and grand parents done so and continue to do so...

Some rap music is debasing of woman and other groups without a doubt, however, to blame rap music for keeping that disgusting word alive is like saying IMHO that Hitler was only playing...

^ In American, it will NEVER fall out of usage...It certainly will not do so in my family's lifetime...

BTW: Excellent ballot!

^ alot of conjecture and paranoia but I'm not sure you've made a valid point. There are plenty of other racist terms for blacks that I almost never hear anymore but the one I hear in rap music is still popular. Is that a coincidence?
I'm not trying to be insulting I only wonder where you're coming from.

"alot of conjecture and paranoia,"

From whose perpective?

There is nothing paranoid about the facts regarding the usage and who is using that vile word...

From where I sit and others, I have made several valid points regarding this issue, perhaps from your own personal experiences, I have not...

To imply that only Blacks use this word through rap music is nothing more than isolating one group when the word was invented by the majority and is more often than not used by the members of the majority, just by the sheer numbers alone proves that...

What is not a coincidence is that you and others appear to present a case that perhaps rappers are the direct cause of why that word continues to exist...

and I to am not trying to be insulting and I wonder where you're coming from...

There are still rednecks and other backward people that use it.

Probably although as cranky has pointed out it never fell out of use among racist. The thing is that rap has spread use of the word around the world.I don't think teens in Japan would be calling each other niggas if it wasn't for rap.
by Corrupt on Sun May 20, 07 6:22pm [+]

I think its fairly obvious that id you compare the usage of the word per white person to usage per black person, there would be a vast disparity.

Also, Hip-hop is the ONLY AREA of our society today, whether literary, scientific, artistic or journalistic, where the usage of the word is both accepted and defended by idiots like Babs. Anyone who says that isnt massively contributing to keeping the word in maistream language is, quite simply, an idiot.

I like to think so, but I'm also an eternal optimist. IMO, popular culture, drven by rap/hip-hop, put the word into the collective subconscious of the young folks today.

This is just conjecture:
If it was not for rap music, maybe we would hear MORE of the N word. Rap has bombarded us with it and made us sick of it. I think perhaps it has made us more conscious of how atrocious it sounds.

I've never heard white americans using that word. In fact, all the yanks I know avoid pronoucing the word nigger. They always use a lexical subterfuge when they want to refer to that word.
But then again none of these acquiantances are exactly rednecks, so i'm not sure about "american agrarian society"...
