Top Marine commander Gen. James Conway, says MRAP vehicles are vital for troop safety in Iraq. "We know the MRAP saves lives. We have yet to have a Marine killed in the al-Anbar province who was riding inside the vehicle," Conway says. The MRAP is designed to overcome the IED, or Improvised Explosive Device, responsible for more than 70 percent of all casualties in Iraq. It has taken the Pentagon years to agree with what the good general said about MRAPs -- in the face of all the evidence. The latest lame excuse is a lack of funding. Now, it seems, they have the funds to order a huge number of these vehicles: so many that the order will be impossible to fill in less than two years. Too bad they aren't there where the troops need them RIGHT NOW. (Note: several politicians, including Tom McCain, have been nicely ensconsed in these vehicles when they have toured dangeous areas in Iraq.) What is really going on here?
