COMMENTS:
You're probably referring to the US alone but in some parts of Europe we have a thing called "price cartelization" which is pretty much what you described on the 3rd paragraph. It's no wacky theory mate.
Voted : Oil companies working together are doing it.
Right now, there are *four* viable forms of alternative energy, all of which can be made applicable in real-life scenarios inside of ten years, and would virtually end ourr dependence on oil. The conspiracy, IMO, lies in both the deisres of the oil companies to continue making the big, big bucks and the certain knowledge that undermining the oil industry would deal the world a crippling economic blow. THink about it. No need for oil, no need for gas stations. Tens of thousands of gas-station employees are out of work. The drivers who deliver gas- done. The vendors who sell chips, sodas, etc to gas stations- done. The drivers who deliver those goods- done. The factories that make those goods- business is severly curtailed. The economy would adapt, but it would be a long, hard road.

Record profits just about every quarter? How can this be?
