STEALING PROFITS

Whatever you think of the massive profits made by some companies (enron etc), the primary objective of ANY firm is to make a profit. Milton friedman said " a firms only social responsibility is to make a profit for its shareholders"

Having said this, a thought occurred to me today. Now bare with me..

Money. A convenient standardised medium through which to exchange goods and services. When you exchange your crisp pound/dollar bills for something you desire, you are effectively exchanging YOUR labour hours for the labour hours that have gone into making the good you purchase. Your hourly wage serving fries at McDonalds can be exchanged for a fraction of the hourly wage that has gone into making your favourite chocolate bar, car, book or porn mag.

PROFITS, per se, arent a part of that process. Besides the amount needed to live a fair life, any excess profits are effectively skimmed from YOUR labour hours. You are exchanging MORE of your labour hours for that chocolate bar than were inputted into its production. This could be seen as you giving away a "freebie" of your time and effort, or it could be seen as "theft" ofyour labour hours, could it not?

In the case of the latter, would it really be "theft" as such if you were to steal alittle back.

Say a company charges you 25% more of your labour hours than went into the product you are making, would it not be fair for you then, assuming you have accurate information on the level of profits, to steal every fourth chocolate bar/porn mag, car (if you are lucky neough to have four cars)?

Obviously, this would be breaking the law, but would it be immoral? Remmeber, even the former pope said that stealing from large companies making excess profits was morally justified.

?

Morally wrong
Sounds suspiciously marxist to me...
You have pulled back the wool for me, KAG. Thanks for being such a great guy and telling me this.

Can't steal. I oncehad a cashier give me back five bucks too muc in change, at a store on the other side of town. I got back on the bus and went all the way back to return it to her. Okay, she had green eyes...

Seriously, even with the disparity you laid donw, KAG, I'd still be driven to maintain the balance.
