fred thompson is off to israel. why?

Fred Thompson coming to Israel

Fred Thompson, US presidential hopeful and former star of the hit television series “Law & Order,” is scheduled to make his first visit to Israel in the coming days.

Thompson, who is said to have a fair chance of winning the Republican presidential nomination, will meet with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and various other senior officials during his tour of Israel.

Of the dozen or so candidates contesting the nomination, Thompson is among the most supportive of Israel.

The former actor, who has also served as a US senator, bucked popular international sentiment by insisting in a hard-hitting editorial column that Israel has been almost too careful in its war on Palestinian terrorism.

“Israel is at war,” Thompson wrote for the conservative website Townhall.com. And the Jewish state has gone to “incredible lengths to stop the war against them without harming Palestinian non-combatants.”

Thompson is also on record as supporting an Israeli military strike against Iran should international diplomacy fail to prevent the Islamic Republic from obtaining nuclear arms.

More liberal political elements in Israel fear Thompson may be too far to the right, and therefore end up harming Israel. During his time as a senator, Thompson was one of the sponsors of the Jerusalem Embassy Act demanding that the US government move its embassy to the Israeli capital in defiance of Palestinian claims to the city.

^ so what is a supposed presidential candidate doing going to israel so early in the game? he's not even a senator anymore. seems kind of odd. do you think he should be going to israel to meet with it's leader? yes or no and why.

Well Kev if you listen to some people on this site he is visiting his respected masters and the people who really run this country.

However us reasonable people realize that he is pandering to a certain ethnic community. He's a politician and that's what they do,I'm sure he'll be visiting evangelical churches in a few weeks to pander to the religious right.
by Corrupt on Wed Jun 06, 07 7:33pm [+]

well corrupt, i'm not saying one way or the other. but consider that there are only a few million jewish people in the usa and not all of them are of voting age. so you do the math. wouldn't it make more sense if he went to ireland, or italy or a central or south american country if that's the case?

so when you say
"some people on this site he is visiting his respected masters and the people who really run this country"

right or wrong, i think they wonder why any candidate would visit a tiny country to drum up support back home when back home, there really aren't all that many of those people. see the point now?
by Kev24 on Wed Jun 06, 07 7:47pm [+]

^ that speaks to why peeps feel that israel has too much influence on our domestic issues.

Voted : Meeting with the leaders of a close ally of the United States
zzz I almost didn't respond to this asinine poll. He is meeting with the leaders of an ally. Funny how I never see A SINGLE ONE of you criticize the THOUSANDS of trips (often for very dubious reasons) your ELECTED lawmakers take YEARLY to places like Paris (over 200), London, Rome (over 100), Rio de Janeiro, Cuba (an enemy), the Cayman Islands, Ireland, Scotland, Singapore, South Korea, Denmark, New Zealand, Spain, South Africa, Greece and luxury destinations in the US. Several lawmakers have taken hundreds of trips at lobbyist expense and several of them taking trips whose value is estimated in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

These are your ELECTED officials. Fred Thompson is NOT. He is not even officially a candidate.

When you start criticizing people for trips to other allies of the US (and even enemies), then I will insinuating what the underlying current of ballots like this are really about. Its rather telling when people continually pick ONE SINGLE country to criticize while ignoring the EXACT same activities regarding other countries. There's a couple of words to describe this. One is hypocrite and the other is...

So where is your ballot criticizing John McCain for traveling to Turkey, Georgia, Montenegro and Italy? Or Hillary with her trips to India, Ireland, Germany and others? Or Barack Obama's trips to Iraq, Russia, Indonesia, Kenya, the Ukraine and several others? Heck, Obama's visited more countries than any other person first elected to congress in 2004.

So tell me... where is the conspiracy minded ballots regarding these trips. Its all somehow different if someone goes to Israel isn't it?

^ easy there fids. don't be a rude 039

"There's a couple of words to describe this. One is hypocrite and the other is... "

^ oh please. that word you want to use, it's just like those "others" on this site that call everyone a racist. has no meaning anymore. there's more to the article than just his trip fids and yeah, i do find it odd that a wannabe presidential candidate is meeting with the leaders of another country. and i don't care how bad you want to use the word anti semite. you're just going to have to deal with the fact that israel, for such a tiny country, plays a major role in world affairs and it affect us directly.

i have a right as an american to question what our current leader do and what our wannabe leaders do. tyring to paint anyone who questions our dealings with israel as an anti semite is lame, bogus and pathetic. sorry dude, but just because israel is a jewish state, criticism of them doesn't equate to anti semitism. now knock it off.

^ just to hel refocus you fids, heres a few snipets for you

"Thompson is among the most supportive of Israel."

^ so maybe you need to ask yourself if he went to meet with say lebanon or with the palestinian leadership and the comments above were about his support of them, how many hypocrits (hint) would be freaking out and saying he was a terrorist sympathizer? hmmmmm.

So, Fred has decided to cut out the middle man -- the democratic process in the U.S. (no debates, no Iowa straw poll, etc.) and go straight to the source.

Well, it's worked for others.

That's probably what he is doing.

Voters who agree or disagree with Fred Thompson policy toward Israel can now decide.

Isn't that what it's suppose to be all about?

^That's probably what he is doing.

Showing he supports Israel what I forgot to add up there

You make a good point Kev but I seriously believe that the influence of the Israeli lobby is serverly overestimated on this site, especially when we compare it's power to that of other interest groups.

"I don't know whether Fred Thompson will actually run for President of the United States, but this guy definitely gets it!"

Yes, Fred gets it, alright. And this Isreali blogger knows it, too.

so what is a supposed presidential candidate doing going to israel so early in the game

I could care less where he goes, his policy toward Israel is well known, I don't see that it's a big deal myself.

That's my opinion for what it's worth.
