[+] serious ballot by Mithrandir created Fri Jun 08, 07 The Bush administration is seeking new legislation to expand its wiretapping powers under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. However Democrats would like to have access to secret legal opinions and other documents from the Justice Department related to the National Security Agency’s domestic wiretapping program, which apparently is no longer operational, in order to have a proper perspective on whether or not to vote for the new legislation. The Justice Department again apparently does not want to turn over the documents in question because they would be “confidential”. Since January, the Bush administration announced the wiretapping program has been under FISA meaning it was no longer conduct domestic wiretapping operations without seeking court approval.
