SPEAKING OF OTHER LANGUAGES

I don’t understand The Elmira City School system, probably the same with school system across the country, but I’ll talk about the system I’m familiar with.

We take the standard foreign language classes, the most popular are French and Spanish, although very few of my classmates including myself could survive in Paris or Madrid if only speaking those languages were required . . .

That’s little sad, because I speak on line to people from all over the world, and if they didn’t speak English, needless to say, we would not be having conversations.

Yes, I know, English is the Universal language of business and diplomacy, I hear many say, why learn another language, I can get by almost any place in the world by only speaking English.

But how arrogant is that, we travel to another country and we expect them to know our language, some of the people I speak to on line come from fairly poor countries, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, many are young, not college grads, but high school students or even lower levels and they speak excellent English. I’m actually trying to learn Arabic, ( That’s another ballot because you will be amazed at what some of my family and friends have said about that) anyhow, :) so many of my on line friends are from Arabic speaking countries, I thought it would be cool to speak that language, it’s a very hard, or it is for me, maybe not you. .

The ballot question is, why can’t we be fluent in another language, what’s up with us?

I am fluent in other languages
English is only language I need to know
I don’t know what’s up with us
SORRY, THIS POLL
IS NOW CLOSED.

I wouldn't quite call myself fluent in *any* language, English *included*. I can *read* about five languages, enough to allow me to manage in Europe without getting lost or butchered. Again, this is that old America-centric mindset at work. "We're superior, kow-tow to us in all things, bend to our will in all others." (Think about it a bit.)

Learning a second language in school is not going to make you fluent in it. You have to immerse yourself in the culture - I learned English when I was five or so, by going to an English school and living in an English community. I took German in high school, and I can say "where is the train station" and that's about it. Europeans find it easier to learn second or third languages because they can travel a couple of hours and find themselves immersed in that culture and language. The prevalence of American television and movies and pop culture also make it easy for people in the Middle East and Europe to pick up a working knowledge of the language.

I think the more languages you know, the broader your thinking becomes, and you can accept different ways of seeing the world.

you're right larry. in my school i remember that you could take spanish, french, german or japanese. that's about it. latin was mandatory for your first 2 years, but damned if i can remember any of it. i think almost all americans in school do take foreign language, but fluency is the issue. once done with it in school, most of us just leave it behind us. sad really, considering that traveling to beautiful countries like china, japan, germany, france, etc., it would be very helpful to at least have conversational skills in that language.

I took Spanish in high school, but growing up in a small New England town I never had a chance to put it to any real use. I live in Texas now where I could put it to use everyday, but unfortunetly I can't remember enough of it to carry on a conversation.

Why can't they all learn English? That would be so convenient. Yes, we're arrogant.

Mindy, you are not the only one.

I took 2 years of spanish in high school, in Los Angeles no less.

I can't remember any of it.

I only have three years of Spanish and one year of French.

Considering where I live, it would have been more practical to learn Polish and Italian.

I'm not surprised that other countries are passing ours when it comes to education.
