ENGLAND, HAVE YOU THANKED THE USA FOR INVENTING THE CAR AND PLANE LATELY?

I think it would be nice, considering that not long after the United States invented the automobile and the aeroplane, that Europeans were using them too. Now they are the two most widely used forms of transportation (except in France where donkeys are very prevalent).

So, England, have you given thanks to the USA for those wonderful innovations?

Yes, I most certainly have.
No, I have not but I soon will
No, I am stuffy and pompous and I will not thank the USA for ANYTHING
I thought the internal combustion engine was invented in France or Germany
Have you thanked the European who discovered America? :o)
Have you thanked the chemist who invented petroleum jelly?
Oh thank yee mighty America

Some of you Americans really believe your the first at everythin', don't ya? *waves flag*

Daimler and Benz were both credited as the most important people in inventing and building the world's first practical automobile to be powered by an internal-combustion engine. Both patented a car in Germany in 1886 but Karl Benz patented his first so most people say he invented the car. Hell you lot didn't even have anything to do with inventing the first self-propelled road vehicle (steam). That was a French engineer, Nicolas Joseph Cugnot. A Brit invented the steam engine by the way. :o)

Jappy, you really need to read some books which weren't written by an American, lol. :o)

^And there are many people who don't credit the Wright bros as the inventors of the airplane but some other bloke called Alberto Santos-Dumont, from Brazil. Others, like russians, say the plane was invented by Mozhayski.

i'll straighted this all out --

Karl (Carl) Benz.
This question does not have a straightforward answer. The history of the automobile is very rich and dates back to the 15th century when Leonardo da Vinci was creating designs and models for transport vehicles.

There are many different types of automobiles - steam, electric, and gasoline - as well as countless styles. Exactly who invented the automobile is a matter of opinion.

If we had to give credit to one inventor, it would probably be Karl Benz from Germany. Many suggest that he created the first true automobile in 1885/1886.

Below is a table of some automobile firsts, compiled from information in Leonard Bruno's book Science and Technology Firsts (Detroit, c1997) and About.com's History of the Automobile.

George Baldwin Selden (1846-1922) United States
1876/95
GASOLINE / Combined internal combustion engine with a carriage: patent no: 549,160 (1895). Never manufactured -- Selden collected royalties.

Charles Edgar Duryea (1862-1938) and his brother Frank (1870-1967) United States
1893
GASOLINE / First successful gas powered car: 4hp, two-stroke motor. The Duryea brothers set up first American car manufacturing company.

so the answer is, karl benz of germany is credited with making what was considered the first true automobile, while charles edgar duryea, an american, is credited with making the first truly successful gas powered car.

^ See, that's how Americans are taught to spin the facts. The question is who invented the automobile? Not who was the most succesful? The answer is Karl Benz, simple, deal with it! :o)
by britvic55 on Tue Jun 19, 07 8:36am [+]

1824, French physicist Nicholas Carnot published a book in in which he set out the principles of an internal combustion engine which would use a flammable mixture of gas vapor and air.

1867, Otto and Langen introduced the first workable four-stroke internal combustion engine which was patented in 1876 and was tremendously successful, selling over 50,000 engines in the 17 years following its introduction. The "Otto-cycle" four-stroke engine was the development that made modern automobiles, aircraft, motorcycles, and other vehicles practical.

1886, Daimler made refinements to the engine and stuck it in the world,s first gasoline powered automobile.

Is as relevent to the question, 'who invented the first automobile?' as 'Bush dreamed of Americans walking on Mars' will be to whatever country eventually does.

Point is, sport, some Americans don't like to hear facts which don't include America being first in. So they throw immaterial bullshit in to make them feel better. Awww, you feewin' awl betta now? lil' fella? ;o)

Has the U.S. thanked Europe lately for Western Civilization, the Enlightenment, and the Industrial Revolution?

What's your problem with England, jappy? They are the only ones who have been foolish enough to stick with the Idiot Bush and his oil/Israel war in Iraq.

Even the Brits and poodle Blair haven't bowed down low enough to the mighty American Empire?

Thankyou America for inventing the car and the plane. There. Did it. Would you like me to thank you for 'saving our asses in two world wars'? Well, thankyou. That was jolly good of you. Would you like me to thank you for saving our economy on numerous occasions? Well, thank you. Do you feel better now? Is your ego ok? Would you like us to bow down and admit that you really are the biggest, greatest, most amazing country ever to exist in the history of the universe? Well, I'm bowing. I hope that made you feel better, oh great American, I shall sacrifice my sister to show our appreciation to you and your fellow compatriots. People in France are doing the same, while tidying up their mud huts and jousting with their little sticks, such an inferior people. So uncivilised. How can the majority of the world loath America, when you are all so obviously superior in every single little way. We know, you do tell us so many times.

is pretty much not crediting an american. so taking your lead, we should leave out important historical facts just to soothe your ego? maybe historical revisionsim is popular on your side of the pond, sport, but over here, we tell it like it is. facts are facts and that's the hard reality.

automobile firsts. firsts. as in important milestones. as in facts of historical significance. as in pertinent to the overall picture. as in part of the history.

But when have you ever heard me go on about how amazing Britain is? I have never, because our triumphs can be matched by failures.
