SHOULD MARIJUANA BE DECRIMINALIZED OR LEGAL ?

[+] serious ballot by thesoothsayer
ACTIVE Wed Jun 20, 07 - Thu Jun 19, 08

This debate has gone on for a long time while many peoples' lives have been ruined because of their choice to use "maryjane"...It reminds me of the witchhunts of yesteryear...millions of dollars are spent trying to prevent the use of "pot" and incarceration of those caught selling or using it. While I don't condone using any products that are smoked I think it's time people took a serious look at what the ramifications would be if it was legal for use by responsible adults for recreational or medical reasons...plus the possibility of taking the dealers off the street that make a profit from this substance...it seems to smack of bigotry to have alcoholic and tobbacco products available while punishing people for marijuana use...what do you think ?

Legalize and regulate " Pot"
For medical use only
Decriminalize "Pot"
Don't legalize "Pot"
All "Pot" users should be jailed

Tax the shit out if it like they do with alcohol and tobacco and put the money into our educational system.

Why leave the importation and distribution up to gangs of criminals?

Voted : Decriminalize "Pot"
Just de-criminalize it, and save jail for real criminals like child molesters and violent offenders. If weed smokers were free we would have much more room for serious criminals to do more time.

I don't smoke it personally but have had the occasional hit or two but i honestly see it being illegal as a major waste of jail space. All those sex offenders getting out because there's no room in jail because of minor things like someone having a bag of weed? come on now...

As long as the Politicans are in bed with the Alcohol industry, it will never be decriminalized. I think its criminal to put people in prison for marijuana use and/or possession and it is cruel and unusual punishment.

Also, because you have Politicans who enjoy playing the morality game, I doubt very seriously that you will get if not most, but ALL Republicans voting against decriminalization (However, I would not be surprise which way the Democrats would vote. Many of your Democrats in office presently are wimps anyway and only flow in the direction in which the political wind is blowing).

H*ll, light em if you got em!!!

Voted : Don't legalize "Pot"
I have thought long and hard about this for years.

There doesn't seem any logical reason to legalize it because we already abuse alcohol and tobacco. In fact we should be making inroads into the abolishment of recreational alcohol and tobacco usage.

Do we really need to add a legitimized strata of society that will spend it's time wallowing in the effects of ANOTHER drug?

Voted : Decriminalize "Pot"
As ridiculous and illogical and hypocritical that alcohol and tobacco--which kill hundreds of thousands of people a year (unlike marijuana)--are legal, I feel pot should only be decriminalized. The reason why is because making it flat-out legal (and regulated of course) would make it more available not only to adolescents and children, but to their parents. Smoking pot around kids is irresponsible and bad for their developing brains.
- I'm not saying I'd exactly be weeping if pot were legalized, but I just feel alcohol and tobacco are pernicious enough an influence. It should definitely be available for medical purposes as well. I'm well aware of the arguments and rationalizations for and against legalization. Private citizens should be allowed to put into their OWN bodies whatever they please, as long as it doesn't cause them to harm others.

Also, the nomenclature isn't trivial: "decriminalize". We may forget that in the States, people who smoke ganja only really officially became 'national' criminals with the passage of the Controlled Substances Act in 1970. Non-violent marijuana smokers should at worse be fined in instances where they're smoking right out in public, or near children, or growing large quantities. The word "criminal" certainly is a slippery one.
by Applerod on Thu Jun 21, 07 1:57pm [+]

(it's not physically addictive, as alcohol and tobacco clearly, strongly are. and it's never killed anyone, while alcohol, tobacco and every other drug are killing people every day... oh god but this is a hard question, I can't do this hard kind of math..)

MARIJUANA WILL NEVER BE LEGALIZED

How else is an honest guy gonna make a buck.
by elvislennon on Thu Jun 21, 07 4:41pm [+]

Jyl, all the more reason to legalize it, IMO.
by Truthseeker013 on Thu Jun 21, 07 5:07pm [+]

I am a medicinal marijuana user, I believe the government should stay out of personal life as long as I am not harming anyone. The government is making money either way, think about it. If it is illegle, then it create jobs for the DEA agents, less competition to the pharmaceutical industries, and competition with tobacco and alcohol companies. Less competition means more money, and more money from all them big industries means more money in the pockets of politicians.

On the other hand if it is legal, then it will take a while to build up the marijuana industry. It is sort like fighting for oil... The government can make mandatory movement toward a cleaner energy source, but major changes seem unlikely as long as we still have the oil resource. Think about it, they will actually lose money if cars run on water, at least for the initial 5 years.

So it is all about the green, not the weed. If someone can come up with a system that address all the economic issues with quarantee that the government can get the most benefit out of legalization, then the government will legalize it.
