COMMENTS:
I asked this once. If I had Huntington's disease I would not have children since there is a 50% chance I would pass it on. I'm against eugenics but conceiving a child while you have AIDS crosses the line in my opinion. I'm not sure if it should be illegal under all circumstances though.

Anyone who says no, could prob be a future Hitler.

There's millions of people out there born with inherited problems, who'll tell you that they love life, and are happy to be alive.

There's probably a lot more able bodied people who piss and moan about how bad life is for them, than most with a handicap.

I agree with Robin on the aids thing though.

Tough question, and good abllot.

I happen to have one of these aforementioned genetic diseases and, were I able to have children, I wouldn't, for fear of passing this on to another generation. But, with the advances that science has made in the fields of medicine, I can't help but believe that some, if not all of these diseases, can be eaten back, giving those future generations a chance.

I'd like to believe that, anyroad.

^ Thing is, Truth, the ballot question is 'should people be ALLOWED?' No-one should make that choice for you, except you.

This is a complex issue and understand why some would not want people with genetic dieases to reproduce however I do not feel the government or society has the right to limit the sexual freedom of the individual. If you don't have control over your own body than your really don't have control over your life.

^ good point corrupt, so should women be allowed late term abortions?
by LCD on Fri Jun 22, 07 6:27pm [+]

depends on the problem and the likelihood of genetic inheritance.

The best solution would be that parents who KNOW that their child will inherit a disabling disability requiring state help be required to pay all subsequent costs for that child. Most cases will clearly not be so black and white however.

Left the Spell-Check in my other brain, didn't I?

"ballot" and "beaten back", s'il vous plait. Merci beaucoup.

LCD:
The reason why late term abortions should remain illegal is because by that stage of development the fetus is pretty much fully grown and ready to start life as an individual being and therefore to terminate it would be murder. The mother's right to control her body does not take precedence over the child's right to live.No one is free to harm another unless it is in self defense.

There may be many traits that we admire, which may be really due to a disease we haven't discovered yet.

But with exceptions...and it would be impossible to enforce...people who knowingly have offspring with "problems" is a form of selfishness...
