DEMOCRACY: BEST WE CAN DO?

Hitler was elected to parliament, and the ancient Greek parliament, which was more representative than what we have today, voted to kill Socrates for teaching young men to think, so is Democracy the best we can do? If people vote to violate their own rights or those of others, is it okay, just because the majority wants it that way? (Another question: Why did we start calling our constitutional republic a democracy just because it votes for it's leaders?)

Democracy is th best we have

I think we have to make a distinction between democracy and mob rule, democracy seeks to protect and defend the rights of all citizens where as mob rule seeks to impose the will of the majority on all.The examples you gave with Hitler and the Athenian parliament are examples of mob rule and thus democracy is still to be cherished.

I think democracy is just a poor version of utilitarianism. The idea of democracy is sound, but like most ideologies, it doesn't work nearly as well when it is put into practice. A democratically elected government is duty bound to represent the people. Does America's or Britain’s government truly represent the majority of the people? I will answer for the Brits on here. Ours doesn't. The overwhelming majority of British people would like to see our troops removed from Iraq. They won't be. The overwhelming majority of British people would not like to see us delegate powers to Brussels. Our government doesn't care, they are going to do it anyway. As for the American form of democracy, I will let you lovely Americans decide amongst yourselves whether you think your government represents your electorates views.

Having said all that, I thank the powers that be every day that I was born in Britain, a country that at least puts on a show of being a democracy. It isn't Utopia, but fuck me, its better than Russia and Sierra Leone.

Hitler won 33% to 37% of the vote and badgered Hindenburg to appoint him to the top position, so democracy wasn't to blame for that. And Hitler did away with democracy. Democracy isn't perfect, but it's better than the alternatives.

Well it has been proved time and time again that the majority vote for a right ASSHOLE.

Not so in 2000 when the majority voted for Al Gore. But... you know the rest.

...and as long as political parties can have access to voting records and be involved in disqualifying eligible voters to effect an outcome, or use machines which leave no receipt or are unverifiable, there will always be doubts as to who really wins and questions about the legitimacy of those in power...
