WHY NO HONORABLE MENTION OF ALTHEA GIBSON AT THIS YEAR'S WIMBLEDON?

[+] ballot by Barbara_Baby_Cakes

Fifty years ago, Althea Gibson became the first black player to win a title at Wimbledon.

There's been a tribute missing at this year's Wimbledon. July marks the 50th anniversary of Gibson's historic singles win at the all England Club and she became the first person of color to take home tennis most prestigious title.

However, why did the Wimbledon brass not honor Gibson at this year's Wimbledon Event.

There are plans to honor Ms Gibson at the U.S. Open. However, why wait until then, Doesn't it make more sense to honor Gibson in the same place where she made history (Wimbledom).

Ms Gibson's life was also full of hardships. Gibson nearly went bankrupt before some close friends, including tennis legend Billie Jean King and former New York City Mayor David Dinkins, began raising money on her behalf.

Gibson's health deteriorated rapidly, she had a stroke and a heart attack before eventually dying of respiratory failure in 2003 at age 76.

Gibson did not receive the endorsements others received, and any bitterness Gibson felt wasn't directed at the generation of minority players she helped opened doors for.

Gibson was an amazing and dominating tennis player during her time.

Fifty years ago Gibsons demonstrated to the world that greatness comes in all colors and both genders.

Therefore, I would like to dedicate this ballot to this wonderful and amazing, human being and women and tennis player in her memory.

Venus Williams became the 4th women to win at least 4 Wimbledon Titles:

Martina Navratilova won nine titles, Steffi Graf won seven, Billie Jean King won 6 and Venus Williams won four.

Please feel free to weigh in and give your thoughts about Ms Gibson's lack of recognition at this year's and past Wimbledon Title Events, the least we can do is make sure no one forgets her.

Ms Gibson deserves to be recongized.
Ms. Gibson was before her time.

COMMENTS:
BTW: In 1956, Gibson made history by becoming the first black person to win the French championship. The next year, she made more history by winning Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals, the first black to win either and she repeated the accomplishments in 1958.

Voted : Ms Gibson deserves to be recongized.
And I don't get why she wasn't. Travesty.

Let's hope it was an oversight...

We don't feel the need to recognise the 50th anniversary of every winner do we?

Seems like you're singling out one woman just because of her colour.

That's racist isn't it?
by wideheadofknowledge on Sun Jul 08, 07 1:20am [+]

^ It is not racist at all, Billie Jean King and the others' achievements would NEVER have been overlooked for 2 days nevermind 50 years, so please, don't go there with me Wide...

What's the fantastic achievement here? 5 singles titles in 3 years is nothing remarkable.

She had nothing to do with the breaking of the segregation of black and white players and simply slipped into the tournaments once the barrier was down.

Highlighting a winner based purely on their race, creed or colour is simply pointless, irritating, overly-pc and quite frankly stinks of a self-righteous need to champion people YOU have chosen to back up some lame political argument you are attempting to make.

Billie Jean won Wimbledon SIX times. There's no comparison.
by wideheadofknowledge on Mon Jul 09, 07 6:00am [+]

^ No matter how you slice and dice it, she was an incredible player and human being whether you agree or not...She was a trailblazer, period and your obvious disdain for this subject matter does not take away from this wonderful woman's essence and achievements...

BTW: Had Billie Jean King won Wimbledon twice as Ms Gibson, her two wins would not have been ignored for 50 years, your argument regarding this obvious fact is not rational.
by Barbara_Baby_Cakes on Tue Jul 10, 07 1:07am [+]

You're right. Had Billie Jean been a relatively mediocre player she wouldn't be idolised and remembered.

As I said - the ONLY reason you are whining about Gibson is that she was black. And, as far as I'm concerned, that doesn't make her special, different or any more worthy than any other two times champion.

Over-emotional outburts like "travesty" are simply nonsense.

Grind your political axe by all means but don't disguise it with this bullshit.

Voted : Ms Gibson deserves to be recongized.
Whether you like it or not, it is because she was a person of color is why her historical achievements were overlooked. She won at a sport at the time that was predominately Caucasian, and you would rather ignore that fact.

You are obviously racially and socially igorant and insensitive. However, it explains why you think and speak the way you do...

"Overly emotional outburst?" Yes many of your commentaries are...

This matter has nothing to do with politics, however your response to my commentaries are most definitely full of B_ll Sh_t...
by Barbara_Baby_Cakes on Fri Jul 13, 07 6:13pm [+]

"A person of colour"?! What planet are you on?

Your Politically Correct stance is above and beyond what most rational people would say was acceptable.

And as someone who has stood up against many racist, xenophobic, homophobic, anti-semitic and downright noxious users I find it a bit rich that you have labeled me socially ignorant.

Try calling a black person a "person of colour" to their face and see what kind of reaction you get.

by wideheadofknowledge on Mon Aug 06, 07 1:03am [+]

^ I decided to respond to your above uninformed comment, first off, I would venture to say that I come in contact with more people of color than you do...Yes, I said "people of color."

You obviously believe that you have the lock on this matter just from your comment, however, I have some bad news for you, "you don't."

However, back to the ballot at hand, she was one of the BEST players in her time and she doesn't get the same recognition as the players who did not accomplished what she did and that is worth mentioning and pointing out whether you like it or not...So, deal with it...
