MONITORING TEEN DRIVERS

I’m sure I know what most of you will say about these tracking devices and bumper stickers

Firstly: if you witnessed what you considered a teen driving recklessly, would you report to Tell-my-mom.com?

Secondly: what is your opinion on parents putting tracking devices on cars to monitor their teens driving habits and whereabouts?

Thirdly: would you use such devices keep track of your teen drivers?

The Washington Post: Parents are using technology employed by truck fleets to monitor drivers, families are spending as much as $2,500 for microcomputers and "black boxes" that feed speed and braking data into a home computer; cockpit video cameras; Global Positioning System devices that track teenagers through their cell phones; and lower-tech surveillance, such as the Tell-My-Mom.com bumper sticker.

I think it's a great idea

COMMENTS:
It's every where. My little sister's backpack has a chip in it and she has a school ID bracelet that has one too. I think it's a bar code or something along those lines. As they enter school, it records the time. I think by a certain time, if not all students are there and the parent hasn't pre-notified the school that someone will be out, they call the parents. At least it's something like that I think. We had something like that so you couldn't leave school without it being recorded. I haven't heard of the drivers thing though, but it makes sense. I only drive on weekends if we leave town. Wouldn't want to drive in the city. If my parents had known about this, I'm sure they would use these options...they are way too protective. But I actually think it's a good idea in this case. The bumper sticker seems kind of silly, but a tracking device is kind of like that Lojack thing anyway. Once I have kids, I'd want to know if they're okay too.

If I saw recklessly-driving teens, I'd hit the web site to report them. Right after I hit the police to report them. If I had kids, I'd use it in a heartbeat. My thinking on the matter to them, were they to complain, would be this.

"If you're not doing anything wrong..."

Hmmm... good questions.
First, I would only "report" the reckless driving if it was clearly past the point of putting it down to inexperience.
Second, I suppose if both parent and offspring agreed on the tracking device, that's reasonable. If they disagreed on the tracking device then the parent should probably respect their son or daughter's growing desire for a measure of independence and freedom of movement. If the parent secretly places a tracking device on the car their spawn is driving, that could be downright pathological - or at least demonstrates a need to strengthen the bonds of trust without resorting to this 1984 shit.

I think it's a good idea - keeps kids on the straight and narrow, and the GPS may help them be found if they ever got into trouble. After my sister got into her third wreck (one a DUI) my mom put something like those bumper stickers on her car ... people actually did call, but just to say how my sister was driving nicely. I don't think she drank and drove or sped any more with that sticker on her car.

New drivers need to be identified - I'm not so sure about people calling in to report bad driving - first how would they get the number and the code down in time to call and report? I like the idea of placing a magnet or sticker on a new drivers car so all the rest of us drivers know to stay clear - check out this web site - www.rookiedriver.net - nice products.
