IS THE WESTERN WORLD AFFLICTED WITH A "WINNER TAKE ALL" MENTALITY?

I read an article recently in which the author believes that the Western world (Europe and North America for the most part)is afflicted with a "winner take all" mentality.

The premise is that Wester civilization is actually declining due to the prevailing attitudes of having polar opposite stances on everything from religion, to politics, to ethics, economics and culture and that everyone is labled and assigned "camps." Basically, that everyone is divided and no side will compromise and that each side will battle it out without any consessions. The fundamental argument is that we are so conditioned to have an "enemy" that we are now living in societies that create hostilities that are driving a wedge between us.

The end result is that nothing is getting done. Ultimately, since we are all at such odds, we have in effect, paralyzed ourselves and nothing of signifigance is getting done. The argument was that this is especially true in politics, where Right versus Left has reached such levels, that government is actually barely functioning and it is just making the divide greater.

Do you feel this? Do you agree that lables and the "one upsmanshipt" mentality is grinding western civilization to stagnation and creating an environment in which no one will compromise? If you do, can you please give some examples of how you see this happening.

I agree that the "winner take all" mentality is harming western civilization.
I do not agree and do not believe the "winner take all" mentality is harming western civilization.

I think leadership that promotes divisive policies rather than compromise and consensus is harmful, As it's been said, "A house divided against itself cannot stand"...

I think that is true, I hear people say don't label me I'm not right or left I'm in the middle someplace, but I don’t really see too many actually in the middle, this site is mini example, one group has one opinion the other another, I see very few minds changing or compromising and IMO it’s a big divide, even if some people don’t want to admit it’s there

Americans have come to see each one of themselves as the single icon of Americanism. If they have everything, then by association, everyone has everything, if in name only. As an example, a lottery winner might think, "I have won a $200,000,000 lottery, so since I am an icon of American prosperity, then by association, everyone is. They should be satisfied imagining they are in my place. Because I won, God's in his heaven and all's right with the world, for everyone, if only by proxy," This is a misbegotten concept fostered by personal isolation.

I think things are more polarized than in the past, and that too many are appointed for political reasons or loyalty than because of competence.

If there weren't such an ethos, we would've had fewer wars. (Does that make sense?)

I agree with Larry. This site seems sort of like a litmus test. I've had more people on here try to force me into a "camp" than I care to mention. What's worse is that most times, they're wrong. It's like a mental condition to label someone as either conservative or liberal. How come you can't be both? Why is it that on all issues, there is an element on here, as in real life, that needs to assign you a category? I think it's what causes many of the problems. Why can't I be conservative on some issues and liberal on others? Why can't I just be an American? Why can't I just be a human being? It just seems to me that certain people need to assign a category to you and define you as such. Want to know why so many people of a certain generation want the following:

One religion and one political party.

It's because people of a certain age group keep perpetrating the same old violent and divisive policies, all of which are based on religion, political affiliation and national border/identity.

Well, the reality is, in the future, people may all have to be the same religion, the same political party and may find that the current deliniation of borders is a thing of the past.

That may seem extreme, but I think it will be the reality before you realize it. Maybe the old world order just doesn't work? Hasn't seemed to so far. Probably because SOME people need to force everyone to take sides...even though most people are a mix of all things.

The last thing I would do is limit the "winner take all" mentality to western nations. IT IS a world problem.
