HOW DO YOU MEASURE PROGRESS IN IRAQ?

When Bush announced his "troop surge" back in January, he said it would enable Iraqis to have provincial elections in the fall of 2007, pass some power-sharing legislation and have the Iraqi government take over responsibility for security of all Iraq's provinces by November (2007). Congress added 18 goals to those benchmarks into the war-funding bill it passed in the spring that included a revision of the constitution, along with de-Baathification and militia disarmament laws and others.

Now, as the interim report deadline is looming, there is no indication that any of these benchmarks can possibly be met. US combat deaths have escalated, violence has spread beyond Baghdad, and sectarian political divides have deepened.

It seems the administration will report that Sunni tribal leaders in Anbar province are turning away from Al Qaeda, that sectarian killings were down in June, and that top officials were able to agree to a unified response on the bombing of a major mosque.

After four years of war, do you buy that as a sign of progress since January, worth the death of thousands of civilians, hundreds of US soldiers and contractors, and billions of tax payer money?

There is no progress, things are getting worse
Yes, for some reason, I can justify this as progress

COMMENTS:
This is a great question. For the most part, I would measure it by the happiness and overall safety and prosperity of the Iraqi people. I hope they're okay. I would also measure it by finding out from our Military what they think. My biggest concern is for all of our military people, since for me, they're the best and I hate the thought of them doing a job that is dangerous and not working. If it's not working, I also do not at all think it's their fault. Every single American military personel in Iraq is the best! My next gage is the regular Iraqi people...if they're happy and are more safe, then it's a success overall. That and that they have a government of their own that is working for them. I also think that clouding the whole issue is the medlesome involvment of Iran and Syria, who are clearly a big factor in the violence. If they're sending in combatants to cause violence, it just makes gaging success all that much harder. China is also a problem, because I read that they are arming the insurgents. It's just a mess all around.

I don't know, those poor Iraqis , no one deserves the suffering they have gone through.

It's a very sad situation.

Maybe how secure and safe Iraqi people are would be one way to measure.

Iraq had been a tragedy for America and for Iraq, and it's all the fault of the Bush Administration.

The President's interests are benefitting financially from keeping the war going. This progress he talks about is a smoke screen. He has no intention of "genuinely" improving their situation.

I would measure it using casualties.

The day that no US soldier murders an Iraqi will be the first step toward progress.
