Cognitive dissonance is the uncomfortable feeling you get when you hold two conflicting thoughts in your mind at the same time. For example, you may believe that you are a good person, filled with good intentions, but realize that you have just seriously hurt a friend out of selfishness. There are three ways to resolve this feeling of discomfort
- the first, by changing the behaviour (don't act selfishly again)
- the second by justifying the behaviour by changing the cognition (I didn't act selfishly, I was working for the greater good, I just forgot, they didn't tell me, etc.) and
- third, by adding new cognitions (he's just jealous, she's too needy, if I hadn't done this then worse would have happened, the consequences were minimal, etc. ).

Interestingly, the thought processes usually take place at an entirely subconscious level.

But can you recall any time you may have changed your mind or your behaviour based on being aware of such an inner conflict?
