DO YOU BELIEVE CONSUMERISM IS ARTIFICIAL OR NATURAL?

[+] serious ballot by Mithrandir
ACTIVE Fri Jul 13, 07 - Sat Jul 12, 08

Are the consumer societies in which we live driven by (artificial) intense advertising and media influence, or are they driven by the natural if evolving needs of people?

It's artificial - I didn't know I needed an iPod until I saw the ad on TV
It's natural - how else could we evolve?

Both actually...we think we need stuff we see, but we don't usually.

Mith - When you say our natural needs are 'evolving', what do you mean?
by Applerod on Fri Jul 13, 07 10:28am [+]

I think I mean that as the society evolves and becomes more technologically advanced for example, our natural needs will out of necessity evolve to match the society we live in. My need for a home computer doesn't seem all that natural, but it has become an essential tool for my job and lifestyle. I don't think I could function as well without it. A generation ago, that wouldn't have been true.

The desire for new things is absolutely natural. It's the impetus for the hunting drive present in all lving beings. It's the way all animals survive and THRIVE. The realization that a new product is on the market causes excited production of dopamine, the instigator of the hunting response. Without it, we stagnate as individuals, and as communities, we would cease to be.

I suppose the "answer", (if there is one,) hinges on how one separates nature from artifice--or doesn't. If we define something as "natural" only if it is a direct production of biology, then where does that leave technology? Isn't technology natural? Or are humans so special that we somehow "trump" nature(...?)
by Applerod on Sat Jul 14, 07 1:34am [+]

My answer is that nothing is unnatural. Certainly there are "deeper levels" of nature--as with instinct. But neither our instincts nor our basic needs have changed since the dawn of our species. They have simply become engulfed by the world we continue to fashion for ourselves.
