WHY DO 75% OF AMERICANS CLAIM TO BE CHRISTIAN BUT ONLY 26% GO TO CHURCH?

I have always wondered, as I am one of the 25% of Americans who does not claim to be Christian.

Hypocrites
People think they have to be Christian to be accepted, so they say they are but they really aren't
Some people are only Christian when it is convenient.
I don't know. I don't believe in Hell and therefore it doesn't apply to me.
I don't believe that heaven waits, for only those who congregate
Some people are spiritual, but don't believe in organized religion

Pretty much why I left the Warm Fold of Holy Mother Church. The last time I attended Mass, standing outside the church, I overheard people saying truly vile things about other parishoners. Once inside though, those same people had the temetrity to address those they had just slighted so viciously as "Brother" or "Sister", and fake expressions of affection toward them. Faith and its associated tenets aren't something you leave at the nave of the church to pick up every Sunday. They're meant to be carried out into the world, to be shared and spread. At least that's how Father David taught me it should be.

Just a guess. It's hard to ask all those people.

What Truth said. I know a great many who not only claim to be, but are Christian. Yet they don't go to church, mainly for that very reason.

Too many churches are more akin to social clubs rather than being a place of fellowship through God and worship. Many would be surprised at how many Christians actually feel that way and refuse to attend.

Years ago, my granfather was attending church when a dirty looking drifter walked in and sat down on one of the pews. After a few minutes, the preacher paused in his sermon and asked the drifter to leave. My grandfather got up and walked out behind him. And never went back. That really says alot about those who didn't walk out also.

Besides, a "church" as defined in the Bible is not a building, but a body of believers. Even Jesus preached against religion.
