IS IT A GOVERNMENTS JOB TO ELIMINATE POVERTY?

I was watching a news show yesterday and some of the people say yes, some say no.

A no person said governments should give tax breaks to corporations which in turn can create more jobs which would help eliminate poverty, another said the government should create conditions, good education that would give people the skills to find good job, still another no vote said marriage, encourage two parent households.

None of the no votes approved of direct payments, such as welfare or even paying for health care.

I personally believe it is part of the governments job , and also help every citizen get access to health care.

What say you about all of the above?

I'll say below what I want to say
^below
Yes, ending poverty is for the public good (the mission of government)

COMMENTS:
I think it's idiotically shortsighted for any powerful government not to try to help poor people because of all the children. Babies happen everywhere no matter what and they grow up..

It's amazing to me what they put us through here to get good health care and medicine. That so many people don't realize health is part of national security is evidence that our Education systems need more help too.

A truly *caring* government would put the needs of its constituents first. What we have is a government that- oh, hell, we all know.

Having educated, healthy citizens contributing to the welfare of any Country is a good thing, paying taxes to ensure defense, health care, education, etc, and to take care of those unable to take care of themselves, not those that are just unwilling...to get to that ideal situation maybe tax breaks to large corporations may help, but the goal of corporations in a capitalistic setting is to make money, not provide jobs, in fact "progress" is realized by getting more done with fewer workers...

The role of government SHOULD be to help eliminate poverty, but I think their own agenda is to ultimately create nationwide poverty of such a large extent that the people become too busy scrounging and scraping to find the time or energy to make waves. The government would like each one us to have to have two jobs to make ends meet.

The government gives tax breaks to large corporations and then those corporations downsize. And I bet some people in the government get mighty huge kickbacks for this fraud.

Giving corpations tax breaks on the premise they will hire more people is a lie.
