I used to believe that it was the ultimate punishment, until the second time I witnessed it in action. It was personal for me then, watching the execution of the man who murdered my fiancee. I thought I'd get some measure of satisfaction out of it. What I got was the empty feeling that all he'd done was escape from true punishment, which, IMO, would've been having to live with what he'd done to her for life. A few SF stories have addressed this issue in a way that I like, forcing the criminal to constantly relive his act from the viewpoint of the victim. *That* might stand as a better deterrent, and we're a lot closer to the technology to bring it about than you'd care to think.

tough question. i'm against the death penalty, but i also thing there could be instances in which it's necessary -- but rarely.

Check out how much it costs to put someone to death. Check out who gets the money. Capital punishment isn't about revenge or justice. It's about the money.

Capital punishment for revenge or payback, I have a problem with. All the revenge in the world will not bring their victims back. And revenge is just not a good enough reason to take someone's life to me. On the other hand, there are people so vile and full of hatred that I really don't feel that they need to be kept around. Someone who botched a robbery and killed someone or killed while under the influence of something is one thing. But as for these psychos who are serial killers or these sickos who rape and kill kids, etc.., I really don't see any reason in feeding them and giving them free healthcare. Truth mentioned the desire to have the criminal to live the rest of their lives knowing what they'd done. That's fine for some criminals, and is a real punishment. But knowing a few people who work in the prison system, I've heard tales of how some of the inmates literally don't care. They laugh and brag about what they've done. They have no conscience whatsoever and the tears of their victim's family don't even phase them. And the one's like that are usualy put in segregated confinement so that they will be protected from the other inmates who want to hang them up by their balls. All in all, they havent got a care in the world. It's these people that I have a problem with letting live. They're of no use to society and a waste of space in my opinion.
