Don't be alarmed: 29,000 sex offenders on MySpace
There are about 600,000 convicted sex offenders in the United States. As of this month, 29,000 of them had profiles on MySpace.
The number comes from a group of state attorneys general who threatened MySpace with legal action if it didn't scrub its social network of registered sex offenders. In May, the company estimated that only 7,000 sex offenders had profiles on the site; the actual number, it found after deeper research, was four times as many.
MySpace has deleted the 29,000 profiles. But as Roy Cooper, North Carolina's attorney general, noted in a statement, MySpace can only associate sex offenders with profiles when the offenders use real names to set up their sites; there could be many other sex offender profiles the site doesn't know about.

How do you feel about all of this?
I just started creating a MySpace profile and I was going to put pictures of my nephew and cousins on it, but now, not so sure.

Do you think sex offenders should not be allowed a myspace profile and do you think putting pictures of my young nephew and cousins on "MY" myspace profile is a bad idea?

It is a breeding ground for sickos, but there are some legitimate users on there.

In my opinion, putting pictures of family on there isn't a good idea anywhere, not just MySpace. That goes for any family members, not just kids. The least someone can do when putting pictures up is to ask the person who's picture your posting for permission. In the case of kids, sometimes they're not able to make the right decision and will just say "sure, put it up".

If you're worried about the wrong people looking at your profile though, set it to private. That way only people on your friends list can see it.

You can't trust a lot of people out in cyberspace.

I've had a profile there since early '06, and the only pic I have there is of myself. (Any brave soul interested need only search my username.) Place is still way too dangerous for kids. Half the contacts I get are from women who wants me to see their nude or nekkid pictures.

Ignorance of a problem breeds witch hunting. Nearly 98% of offenders either know their victim well or are related to them. If you are really worried about your nephew, pay attention to people close to him and their relationship. If something seems off, take no chances. A big tip off is a close family friend or cousin, maybe even another Uncle that likes to watch the boy or take him for a day. Wise up here or you do nothing but create paranoia when you could actually help prevent your nephew from being molested. 98% chance if he is, you know the guy or girl that is doing it.
