I find it odd that so many people believe that regardless of whether or not a person is held accountable for their actions that karma will magically correct the balance. I understand why people want to believe in it. The most adamant believers tend to be goodhearted people with a healthy sense of guilt, but unfortunately they mystify the guilt process under the misconception that such a shame of evil is universally felt. I don't think any reasonable human being can look at the faces of the people in power and honestly believe that good people are prospering. If karma keeps evil men in check then it would seem unlikely that Hitler could spread fascism and commit massive genocide all while living a life of luxury during the years of his crimes.
At best, karma is the cornerstone of an otherwise healthy sense of optimism (Good will always triumph!). At worst it is the cornerstone of philosophical laziness (There is no reason to hold that person accountable. Karma will punish him.) Either way, if there is a balance to good and evil (seems unlikely since both are subjective) it is certainly not applied to every individual fairly. Six million children will starve to death this year mostly due to the location they are born into and the epidemic poverty prevalent in their culture, not because of some great moral infraction that babies are committing every day (alright that was sarcasm, but the point stands.)

If the laws of karma were real, wouldn't good people be more prosperous?

Yes.
No. I will explain below.

COMMENTS:
Do the six million that starve each year have something to do with us hogging all the resources?

A man like Hitler may have gotten int o power through luck, but he did face a crappy ending.

And as for the laws of karma as a sense of lazinness. The dalia lama has stated that karma means action, it does not mean that ou cannot do anything to change your life

Aya- I'm aware that the Buddhist understanding of karma is far different than the western version (I think the christian idea of a benevolent God made westerners twist the original concept to the revenge scenario karma that is commonly perceived in American culture.) I should clarify that my criticism is reserved only for the western misconception of karma. Although I'm not happy with the eastern version either.

The laws of Karma does exist, those so call GOOD people are catching hell from a previous life andor lives of dirty deeds...Those so call BAD people were victims of either others and/or circumstances of a previous life and are getting their just deserts...

We all get what we put out into the universe, if not now, then later...So it goes...

I strive for the true essence of Karma: "Karma2Die4" thats when you know you have mastered the laws of Karma!

Every individual soul is aware of each life it lives and each Good and Dirty deeds it committs, the body is not created to possess such knowledge, the body is merely available to move the soul through the process of soul progression...Oh how I do enjoy the subject matter, can you tell?

Excellent Ballot BTW, worthy of karma hits!

karma is not so much a "system of justice" rewarding good actions and punishing bad actions, as it is a law of cause and effect, more akin to the "laws" of natural science. actions have their repercussions, and if we believe in the eternity of the soul (which i'm still not certain i do.....) then our actions set into motion effects that come back to us, like slapping a pan of water causes it to spash, or sticking one's hand in a fire causes it to burn. Karma doesn't mean an eye for an eye or a tooth for a tooth. It is more of a leveling device on the behavior and evolution of the soul possibly in more than one lifetime - a sort of checks and balances.
Then again - it may be that we just vanish in a poof of breath once we die....
