WHAT IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE ONE OF THESE FOUR FREEDOMS OVER THE OTHERS?

[+] serious ballot by contragrain
ACTIVE Tue Jul 31, 07 - Sun Jan 27, 08

In an FDR speech, he spoke of "four freedoms". Freedom of Speech, Freedom from Want, Freedom of Religion, and Freedom from Fear. Artist Norman Rockwell (1894 to 1978) depicted them in a series which is possibly one of the most important propaganda art pieces used in promoting the sale of war bonds during WWII. Much has been said in reference to freedom and freedoms on this site. I read most of these ballots from a diverse group of balloteers before posting this one, and I must say that all of them were quite thought provoking.

Please focus on THIS question for the purpose of this ballot. Suppose you had to rank them in order of personal importance and value to you. Which one of these Freedoms would you most desire to gain, or most desire to keep? Please comment, as the real reason for the ballot is to get people thinking about what freedom really means in the first place. Don't assume that I think Americans have more answers than anyone else. EVERYONE is encouraged to comment, and your comment, if serious, will be held as valuable. I chose to list the freedoms alphabetically by the third word in each phrase.

Freedom from Fear
Freedom of Speech
Freedom from Want
Freedom of Worship
All Four are inextricably dependent on the others.

Voted : Freedom from Fear
Freedom from fear is the most important for me. I think fear is the most paralyzing agent that would hold me back from being myself. Freedom from want is the next in the list – you can’t really think straight if you’re cold, ill and hungry. Then freedom of speech (in the original sense of being able to speak truth to power, although freedom of thought is even more important to me), and last freedom of worship – external forms of worship don’t mean much to me.

Thinking this through, in my mind, freedom from fear is the most immediate personal freedom within my own mind and perception – then freedom from want is the next most essential one, in terms of survival. Freedom of speech becomes a political freedom and freedom of worship might be more cultural.

Each of us will necessarily have a different conception of what these things represent. Johnny, I believe that Rockwell's art concerning the Freedom of Want does depict fdr's conceptualization at the time. The word was being used to address basic needs, to which Mithrandir has alluded. I could be mistaken, of course, about then President Roosevelt's intent; however, his institution of rations during that war period do, I believe, substantiate this interpretation of his intent. Obviously he wasn't suggesting that we make everyone a millionaire. It's actually a biblical use of the word, ironically enough. The most rudimentary knowledge of references within that text. Ps. 23, "the Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want" It means to have basic needs met, first, so that a person can have a clear head to face other obstacles. BTW, the people at THAT dinner table (re:Rockwell's piece) should not have gotten up hungry. It was the Great Depression. I feel confident his intent (at that time) was food, clothing, shelter. Nothing more. However, I would have to concur with your analysis concerning the way people have taken it to extremes.

Also, this ballot doesn't address morality. Freedom from Want shouldn't mean that a person able to provide for himself/herself or his/her dependents should remain a "ward" of the state. That would constitute communism, imo. And I am a very strong believer in the free market, letting a person earn what they can, as long as it's honest.

Easy for me. I want my right to make my voice heard for what I believe in, and what I question the validity of.

I think all are, freedom of worship also means freedom not to worship if you so choose, freedom of speech, if I disagree with what government is doing, I want the right to express that, freedom of want, I'm thinking only because of the picture, that no one should go without food and shelter, freedom of fear, I shouldn't have to worry for my life or life of my loved ones.

I guess that's all I have to say. :)
