not all priests and ministers are like that. That's like saying all black people eat watermellon and all whites drive Fords.
Voted : Most of them don't
But for those who do, like any pedophile, they are sick, sick sick. Maybe they thought by becoming a priest they could get access, like becoming a teacher for example, a way to get close to kids.
I didn't say all of them are like that.
I guess what I'm asking here is, out of all the vices they could choose, why pedophilia? What makes some of them choose this vice over others, and how do they justify it?
Well, in the middle ages, priest who loved a good bloodshed, used to use a mace in war, since in Bible it was written that it is forbidden to hit a man with the sword's edge. Mace has no edge, so it was OK to use it. The matter of strict interpretation of a text is not new and in a sense they are using a principle of penal law: "nulla poena sine lege" - "there can't be a crime if the law does not forbid it". But I think they are just sick.

Wouldn't it be a better idea to allow priests to marry?
Voted : It's a matter of availability...
Both within the Church and without, pedophiles are creatures of opportunity. They prey where the pickings are easiest. It's easy to gain access to lots of kids through the various social functions that churches provide.
nucky, there are a lot of priests who are alcoholics and drug abusers. Those vices are more easily covered up. A few years ago, one of the most powerful cardinals in the country was at Promises. I can't remember his name, sorry to say.
scissors, I dont think that is the reason they turn to kids, if they wanted sex, plenty of women out there they could cheat on God with, they were pedophiles before they joined the church and they will be after.
I'm not sure why you singled out priests NF...it seems you are associating priesthood with pedophilia. I'm guessing all the media coverage of Catholic priest pedophile cases was the impetus to your thinking here. What I find interesting is the coincidence of massively covered Catholic church scandals coinciding with the fact that the Church,as apposed to evangelicals and such, came out against US incursions into the middle east. It's not as if there aren't pastors and rabbis raping and molesting children. It isn't as if there aren't scandals among other denominations and faiths. Also interesting is that Christian leaders from other denominations who are staunchly pro-war in the middle east were not so long ago prodded, investigated and attacked by the media. Now they enjoy enhanced global communications and look...NO MORE SCANDALS!Imagine that, scandal free! FWIIW,I don't condemn spotlighting pedophile...it's the selective coverage that I question.
Voted : They chose to be priests because they were pedophiles
they most likely learned it from the priests they had as children

They should let priests marry. Maybe they should require it.
^ Not to mention that for centuries church policy lured many of the intellectual elite and gifted of Europe into celibate lifestyles. To my knowledge that was not the case with Judaism and maybe that dichotomy helps explain Ashkenazi dominance in many fields today.
they're children, and males, so therefore it's not sex, and not wrong, and god doesn't mind. that's how much religions fucks with your mind, that that can actually make sense.

Sexual repression is unnatural and unhealthy. It is predicated on the assumption that humans are qualitatively different and better than animals, when in point of fact, humans are animals. Reproduction is an instinct, like self-preservation. There is little doubt in my mind that the sexual deviance (pederasty/pedophilia) witnessed in some priests is a direct byproduct of repressing one of our most fundamental instincts, and casting sex as a moral issue as opposed to a natural tendency. - (Maybe that's obvious.)
like i say, they see sex as evil, so they're doing something they don't see as sex.
^Interesting point.
