IS COMPRESSED AIR THE AUTOMOTIVE POWERPLANT OF THE FUTURE?

India's largest automaker, MDI, will start production of the Air Car in August 2008. It runs on nothing but compressed air.

It costs $12,700, can hit 68 mph and has a range of 125 miles. It will take only a few minutes for the CityCAT to refuel at gas stations equipped with custom air compressor units; and it will cost around $2 US to fill the air tanks. Also, a built-in compressor that can be plugged into an electric outlet can refill the tanks in 4 hours. Unfortunately, it won't be sold in America or Europe anytime soon.

This is truly revolutionary, we no longer have to be big oil's bitch! And yeah, it's a slow POS, but technology will improve and there will be fast and cool compressed air cars soon enough.

Your thoughts?

Compressed air technology is the automotive powerplant of the future.
It looks good on paper, BUT . . .
Get them the hell over here! I'd buy one!

Riding around on a ticking bomb of highly compressed air? Sounds crazy, I like it. But you will use some serious juice to run a compressor for that thing and its only demonstrated an actual distance of 5 miles on pure air. For long range and high speed there seems to be some sort of gas engine which heats the air up. And I cant wait to see how soon before there is a "compressed air" tax.

Also what will be the effect of very cold temps on the compressed air?
