We don't just embrace any and all cultural practices. Should this be so? I'll give you three or four examples of things acceptable in other cultures which are not acceptable in ours. How do we deal with them in such a way as to respect the culture from which the people came, or to tell people that, truthfully, we've decided to move away from that practice? 1. cockfighting-- (see picture) -- a hundred years ago, this was acceptable in the US. However, I believe it is banned in all 50 states today. Some of our immigrants from Asia and Mexico still have close ties to it. There was a recent bust in my part of CA concerning this. 2. Polygamous/Polygynous Marriages -- Of course, polygamy was a custom which dated back to biblical times, and was practiced by some of the Patriarchs of the church. Some in Islam still practice it. The Mormons practiced it in the US for a time. Do we have a right to tell people they can't have more than 1 wife? Polygyny was a practice in the Pacific Islands and seemed to work fairly well. Do we have the right to tell a woman she can't be married to more than one man? 3. The age at which a minor becomes an adult. Some of our Hmong and Mien immigrants were and are of the practice of marrying their daughters off to a 20+ year old men (also Hmong or Mien). The girl then moves in with the husbands's family. These girls can sometimes be as young as twelve in their culture. Does this exceed the parameters of decency in our culture? It didn't a few hundred years ago. In the late 1800's my own grandfather and grandmother married when he was 27 and she was 14. That was in Georgia. So, who gets to decide, when cultures collide? Who sets the parameters? I made this an adult ballot, because I didn't want to discuss what is considered pedophilia with minors. And the third example addresses just that. This is serious. At what point does multi-culturalism actually cross some invisible line, and the culture itself begins to erode? I'll give my opinion, it's the best. No, my opinion is better.
