I did a rough--but fairly accurate estimate--of how many people in Mexico DO NOT consider Spanish their mother tongue. These are Mexico's indigenous language speakers. They number, all totaled, approximately 12 million individuals. The associated picture is someone's break down of the number of Nahuatl speakers (Mexico's largest indigenous language group) in the provinces around Mexico City. Why is SO LITTLE attention given to indigenous speakers at the national/international news level? Why must you be working on an advanced level degree to learn their language in a University?

The people are insignificant and have little to contribute.

COMMENTS:
Needless to say that, (it should be obvious) Spanish and English have a lot more in common with each other than either of them do with indigenous languages, which are interrelated.

For some reason (maybe I inadvertently checked the wrong box) comments were not allowed on ballot #116833. The two ballot questions are related. If you will, go there, then come back to comment here. I have to go to work. I'll come back later and read your comments.

Probably because the only language which matters, in the eyes of those in power, *is* the language spoken by those in power. Granted, there is a need for a uniform standard of communication in life, else we have the Tower of Babel 2007. But we also can't afford to lose languages through ignorance and disuse. I once read somewhere that we lose many languages yearly this way.

I don't speak the same language as my great grandparents did. I could not care less if an indigenous dialect goes the way of Cornish, Mohica or Wappo. They are welcome to come join in our reindeer games.

It would be a lot of work to learn that many languages.
