CALGARY (CBC) - A New Brunswick man says he was denied free medical care by an Ontario hospital - and was forced to ride the bus through three provinces with injuries that included two broken arms.

Kyle Russell, who is from Eel River Crossing in northern New Brunswick, said he got into an accident in mid-July while biking home from a new construction job near Collingwood, Ont.

"I got warm so I took my sweater off and I put it around the handlebars, and it got caught in the front wheel," Russell, 20, told CBC News on Thursday. But once he got to the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital, he waited 45 minutes just to speak with a nurse. "She asked me for my health insurance card and I gave it to them, and she said it cost me about $300 and some just to get checked out by a doctor," he said.

Confused, in pain and without that kind of cash, Russell bought a ticket for the next bus home.
"Trip was kind of long and I had to carry my bags five times," Russell said. "It was kind of hard." He didn't know at the time that he had two broken arms, a broken wrist and a broken elbow. Once he arrived back in New Brunswick, doctors in Dalhousie immediately sent Russell for surgery on his arms.Hospital not sure what happened. Collingwood hospital CEO Linda Davis said she is not sure what happened.

"We do not have any record of Kyle being or approaching us in our emergency department," she said.

Davis said a health card from any province should ensure free treatment.

Russell agreed, adding that Ontario felt like a foreign country to him and it wasn't until he got back to New Brunswick that he got the care he needed.

"They should have at least checked me out. I mean, I'm Canadian, I'm not from a foreign country."

That's interesting. I'll have to pop over to one of the neocon web sites to see how this is playing. And I'm sure it is...

Things happen , but it dosen't mean the fall of the Canadian Health system, as I'm sure some people will say, as truth pointed out.

'He didn't know at the time that he had two broken arms, a broken wrist and a broken elbow.'

What's he complainin' about? It's not as if he had to cartwheel home was it? ;o)

such an important story you figured you'd repeat it twice.

truth, your comment is mystifying to me. but that's par for the course.

seems like a misunderstanding. the poor guy maybe thought that he had to pay the $300 right then and there? sounds like it all might just be his confusion due to being in pain and probably his bad luck to deal with an ignorant and lazy nurse.

either that or canada is doomed. doomed i tell you!

lcd how is it a red herring? that makes absolutely no sense at all. it would be a red herring if it were a false or enhanced story. dude, if it happened, it happened and that ain't no red herring.

by ABC on Thu Aug 09, 07 6:40pm [+]

It was obviously an error made by a stupid clerk not knowing the proper procedures.
