ANTI-ESTABLISHMENT ARTISTS

Eg.. The Sex Pistols. If Anti-establishment Artists hang around long enough, do they automatically become establishment?

Even the most rebellious artists are tamed with time or else die. Some may struggle and resist that bit longer, but it's ultimately futile. However Anti-establishment at the beginning , that just becomes part of the maketability.

The establishment absorbs them and eventually they are seen as simply harmless or emasculated.

If they're financially successful I'd say probably yes. I think Bob Dylan once said it was hard to protest when you're making 12 million dollars a year.

The people who embraced them as anti-Establishment ab initio are now part of a form of Establishment themselves. We become what we protest against, sometimes...

the hippies are a perfect example of this, they turned out to be the worst polluters (SUV's) and corporate raiders

It's sort of like what Hegel says thesis gives rise to antithesis and eventually they combined to make something new. Todays rebels influence the establishment so much that they become one with it.

I saw the Sex Pistols when they did the reunion tour in the late 90's.

In my opinion, reforming was a betrayal to the very movement they’d spawned. They where together for a short time, splitting up with anger and chaos. In other words, the 'perfect' punk rock career. Short, vulgar and very much to the point.

Seeing 4 middle aged men, with pot bellies, singing about Anarchy kind of spoilt the image for me.
