SACRIFICNG FOR THE GREATER GOOD OF THE NATION

[+] serious ballot by Kev24
created Mon Aug 13, 07

some ballots have given me the idea for this ballot.

during word war 2, it's a fact that the british made huge sacrifices. while americans did to a degree, it pales in signifigance to what the british people did.

being honest do you think today that either the british or american people would or could make such sacrifices in the face of a national crisis. no flag waving bravado here, just an honest answer and explanation.

americans would and could
americans would not and could not
british would and could
british would not and could not

i'm bummed to say that so far, when faced with a national crisis, the american people have been less than willing to see things through the long haul or to make personal sacrifices. i think it's a problem.

Yes, and George W. Bush had the opportunity to ask the American people to do so in the war on terrorism. Instead, he gave us tax cuts and the war in Iraq.

In ww2, things were rationed, I dont think in UK or USA they had a choice, but I do think if it came down to it ,many Americans would step up to the plate. Not sure I would if Bush asked me because I don't believe a word he says,

^ I also think they would have in ww2 even without the rationing

...and, I'd venture to say so would the British, or anyone else for that matter.

Funny thing about sacrifices... when you HAVE to make them, you usually do.

Oh, yeah, and a "word war" is when politicians fight each other, right? A "world war" is when they get us into the mix.

yeah tincan but the war on terrorism is dubious at best. i'm talking about in peac or war. do the american people have the discipline to give up things. to sacrifice for the long-term greater good. look at us right now. we have a government in place -- an executive branch at least, that's totally bogeying our civil rights and saying "it's for your own safety" and we let them do it. but we're talking real sacrifice here. in england during ww2 they made genuine sacrifice. forget rations. it's not like they starved. but they sent their kids away to protect them, they cut power, they lived with the bare essentials, they did it all. could we?
by Kev24 on Mon Aug 13, 07 3:55pm [+]

Any nation would if there was no choice. Americans fight optional wars and see no reason to sacrifice.

all countries did, 10% of the canadian population joined the military in ww2, if push came to shove all petty problems would be forgotten

But, IMO, it would have to be under much direr circumstances than we face now. The wolves would have to be at the door.

If you stand in the US, it is abhoriently obvious that there is no war going on by all appearances. A few days ago I crashed by bike and lay on the side of the road for ten minutes with a broken hand and in shock. Only one guy stopped, whenever crap like this happens most people just want to do their own thing and not spend time on other's problems. Americans have the capacity to sacrifice, but they wouldn't.
