as they were 6 years ago?
Does anyone in the Washington, DC area remember or have they been following the story about the 2001 murder of Daniel Robert Petrole? He was 21, and apparently involved in a drug ring at the time, being double crossed by his friend Owen Merton Barber IV who gunned him down. Barber claimed it was a "hit" orchestrated by a mutual acquaintance and upper level dealer, Justin Michael Wolfe. All three were graduates from the more affluent Chantilly and Centreville Districts. One had a father who worked for the Secret Service protecting Presidents Carter and Reagan. Apparently the three were equally drawn by the lure of the "easy money" that the traffic of black market drugs provides.
An excerpt from the Washington Post article which ran at the time reads:
"He was in way over his head, and he didn't know it until he got capped," one drug dealer said. "He should have expected what he got, and no one should be surprised by it. He lived hard and fast and died young. A drug dealer died. That's what drug dealers do: They get killed or they go to jail."
Barber plead guilty and testified against Wolfe in exchange for a life sentence, which he is serving. Wolfe was convicted, and given a death sentence, originally set for July 2005. That was stayed. I don't know if he was given a new date, or if he in fact has already been executed.
Question restated:
Are middle class youth/young adults still as naive about the drug culture as they were 6 years ago?

Yes, many are still just as naive.
No, American Middle Class Youth are waking up to the realities.

"A drug dealer died. That's what drug dealers do: They get killed or they go to jail."
Not in a compassionate society where drug abuse is recognized as an illness and not a crime.

Yes, RobinGaylord, that was a quote from the article ran in the Post. I probably should have set it apart from the rest of my text. However, the dealer and the abuser are not always the same person.
